  • Thomas Brigstocke (1809-1881) - A Vanitas Still Life, with a Skull, a Roemer, a Marble Plaque with Cupid Embracing Pysche

Thomas Brigstocke (1809-1881) - A Vanitas Still Life, with a Skull, a Roemer, a Marble Plaque with Cupid Embracing Pysche

    Est: £400 - £600

Thomas Brigstocke (British, 1809-1881) A Vanitas Still Life, with a Skull, a Roemer, a Green Vase, and a Marble Plaque with Putti Embracing inscribed on the reverse "still life by ... Brigstocke Esq., Master of ... Carmichael Esq - he got the RA Gold Medal for this oil picture at the age of 16" oil on canvas h:39 w:52 cm Provenance: From a Herefordshire country house. Other Notes: Thomas Brigstocke (1809-1881) entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1826 but, sadly, never won the gold medal and indeed never won a prize of any kind, there. It is possible that Brigstocke entered the prize for a premium at the Society of Arts; the register does record that he was recommended by Henry Sass, who ran a private academy in Bloomsbury. As Brigstocke was 16 when studying with Sass this story of a gold medal may have some truth, but not in relation to the Royal Academy.
