In the volume Susan Ehrens writes about this image, which used Brigman's niece and her husband as models. The image combines two negatives, one of the couple and the other an image she made of sand erosions, a common theme during this period. Ehrens writes, "The dynamic pattern of the sand intertwines with the two figures to create a veil of mystery, transforming what might have been a traditional portrait into something more evocative." (p. 212) Reproduced: Ann M. Wolfe, et alia, Anne Brigman, A Visionary in Modern Photography (Rizzoli/Electa and the Nevada Museum of Art), p. 110-11 and fig. 52

Anne Brigman signed Grand Canyon photo

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Heading: Author: Brigman, Anne Title: The Grand Canyon Place Published: Publisher: Date Published: 1921 Description: Gelatin silver print. Image: 24.8x18.5 cm (9¾x7¼"); mount and frame: 35.3x27.8 cm (14x11").Signed and dated by photographer on mount. Anne Wardrope Brigman (née Nott) (1869-1950), was one of the original members of the Photo-Secession movement in the United States, and was active in the bohemian community in the San Francisco Bay Area, befriending Jack London, George Sterling, Charles Keeler and others. Her most famous images were taken between 1900 and 1920, and depict nude women in primordial, naturalistic contexts. Brigman's deliberately counter-cultural images suggested bohemianism and female liberation. Her work challenged the establishment's cultural norms and defied convention, instead embracing pagan antiquity. The raw emotional intensity and barbaric strength of her photos contrasted with the carefully calculated and composed images of Stieglitz and other modern photographers.

Unten links signiert "Anne Brigman". Doppelt auf Trägerkarton mont. Anne Wardrope (geb.
