      HUGH BRIDPORT (BRITISH-AMERICAN, 1794-1868), ATTRIBUTED, MINIATURE PORTRAIT OF REVEREND HENRY CONWELL, ROMAN CATHOLIC BISHOP OF PHILADELPHIA, watercolor, after John Neagle (1796-1865), waist-length depiction of sitter in partial profile, his face turned towards the viewer, wearing richly colored vestments, no signature located, 19th century inscription to paper backing verso "Painted by H. Bridport / from a portrait by J. Neagle / Philadelphia". Housed in original dore bronze frame retaining fitted leather case. Circa 1826. 3 1/8" x 2 7/8" sight, 5 1/4" x 4 1/8" case. Catalogue Note: Born in England, Hugh Bridport (1794-1868) exhibited several miniatures at the Royal Academy in London in 1813. In 1816, he immigrated to the United States with his brother, George, and the two settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where they established a studio.

      Hugh Bridport (English/ American 1794-1868) miniature portrait of james maxwell kennedy (1809-1848) Signed "Bridport" watercolor on ivory, gilt locket frame with hair inset at back. 2 3/4 in. x 2 1/4 in. PROVENANCE: Descended in the Kennedy family to the present owner. See lot 111. Hugh Bridport was born in London and trained at the Royal Academy . He arrived in Philadelphia in 1816 and taught drawing at the Franklin Institute from 1826-1833. His work was exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and the Artist's Fund Society.
