EXCEPTIONAL CHARLES BRIDGMAN OIL ON CANVAS

      Est: $1,500 - $2,500

CHARLES JENNINGS BRIDGMAN (American 1841-1895) Battledore and Shuttlecock - 1873 Oil on canvas Signed lower right and titled, signed and dated on verso 22 inches x 18.5 inches Charles Jennings Bridgman was the first son of three, born to Dr. Frederick Bridgman and Lovina Jennings in Tuskegee, Alabama on May 30, 1841. His father graduated from Harvard Medical College in 1830 and moved to Macon, Georgia as a practicing physician. He later moved to Tuskegee in 1840 where he was married in July of that year. His father died when Charles was 9 years old. His mother and her three sons left for the north in October 1860, just before the war broke out. Charles is the older brother of celebrated orientalist painter Frederick Arthur Bridgman (1847-1928). Throughout his career Charles exhibited widely including at the Brooklyn Art Association from 1866 to 1886; the National Academy of Design from 1872 to 1884; the Boston Art Club in 1881; and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1881 to 1885. It is also known that he exhibited in London as well as in France. Records indicate that along with his brother Frederick he also exhibited at the Sherk Gallery, on Fulton Street, in Brooklyn. Charles made a number of trips to the continent where he first studied under Leon Bonnat (1833-1922) and likely also painted with his brother in Paris in 1872. The March 20, 1895 edition of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, carried a lengthy “Post Mortem Tribute” to Bridgman. In it the author relates that Charles was more or less a recluse who never married and who was “hampered by a strong reserve.” The obituary states that Charles did some magazine illustrations, wrote plays, began novels, and plunged into short stories. It concludes, “There was a wealth of fancy and aspiration in the quiet and reserved mind, which belonged to one whom the world would call slow. In fact, those who knew Charles Bridgman best had reason to be dissatisfied with him, for he seemed never to be in touch with himself, to understand himself, and to know how to bring out his own talents and endowments.” Of his known works, the offered painting must surely be considered one of Charles Bridgman’s best undertakings. The costume of the figures suggests a Brittany cottage filled with all the accoutrements one would expect in a studio setting of this period. The main subject is a mother and child playing Battledore and Shuttlecock, the forerunner of modern-day badminton. The profusion of props carefully arranged in the studio appear still life-like and would seem to reflect a great deal of the artist’s personality. In the lower left corner laying on the floor is a copy of Danish composer Frederick Kuhlau’s (1786-1832) work titled "Three Fantasies Flute Solo", depicted behind a flute resting upright on the leg of the easel. According to one account Charles was an amateur flautist. The easel displays an expansive dusk landscape and is further adorned with embroidered fabric, silk ribbons, and fresh flowers. On the background on the wall in the upper left is an evergreen branch above a religious print of the Virgin and Child. The right corner exhibits two portraits of Brittany costumed girls as well as a small Brittany village with thatched roofs and a flower garland. Further still, the walls exhibit an artist’s plaster cast of a face and a bird’s nest. The chair in the right corner is covered with various textiles, as is the chair in the foreground and with the addition of a Venetian style Mardi gras mask. In the lower right corner, near the feathered birdie is displayed an artist’s pallet loaded with fresh paint. At right of center at the upper margin is suspended from the ceiling on a blue silk ribbon, a large mercury reflective bulb which depicts the opposite end of the studio including a window and a wall full of other paintings, perhaps an homage to Jan van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait which Bridgman would likely have seen at the recently formed National Gallery London. Charles J. Bridgman (American 1841-1895, active New Orleans, late 19th c.), "Interior by the Fire Place", oil on canvas affixed to board, signed lower left, 10 1/4 in. x 14 1/4 in., framed. The following group of five contemporaneous Victorian portraits is perhaps altogether unprecedented, as multiple likenesses of the same prominent New Orleans family, all portrayed at a single moment-1877/1878-by an important painter of the late nineteenth century. This concentrated 'group-image' represents the talented and successful family of Adolph Pollatsek (Lot 1036), his wife (Lot 1037) and eldest daughter (Lot 1040), as well as Adolph's brother (Lot 1038) and sister (Lot 1039): its uniqueness derives largely from the skill of its painter, Bernard Moses, in simultaneously capturing five such highly disparate personalities. Adolph, the head of the family, was a consummately talented and experienced pianist, who in addition to his concert career was also editor and critic for the prestigious New York Musical Courier; among his eminent friends, for example, were Anton Rubenstein and Jan Paderewski, among many others. His wife was a native Louisianian, though born of German parents. Adolph, his elder sister Nina, and their younger brother Isidore, were all born in Hungary, where Adolph taught piano at the court in Budapest. The two brothers emigrated to America-perhaps together-immediately after the Civil War; their sister landed in New York in 1871, and all three may have stayed there for a brief period. In 1872 Adolph and Isabella were married in New Orleans. Their first offspring is almost certainly the subject of the captivating image of A Child, Olga. The family home was at 1907 Canal Street (near Prieur), and was occupied until after the death of Isabella Hahn Pollatsek in 1927. Thereafter the grown children transferred to Bayou St. John, living first at 1370 Moss Street in the James Pitot House of c. 1799-1800, disassembled and rebuilt after 1964 in the Desmare Playground. The two spinster sisters Sydonia and Nina Pollatsek commissioned their nephew, Dr. J. Adolph Reynolds, to draw up plans in 1938 for an almost exact replica of the Pitot House, on the corner of Moss and St. Ann Streets, in which they installed these paintings as well as a multitude of other heirlooms. When those sisters died in 1965-1968, that last house at 800 Moss Street was inherited by their niece, Constance Reynolds, who had a long and brilliant career with the ballet corps of the New Orleans Opera. It was her own death last year at 95 that brought these very remarkable paintings onto the market, in the utterly unusual character of a single unified group.
