        American WWI recruitment poster. 'Enlist - On Which Side of the Window are You?', artwork by Laura Brey (1891-1980), Geo. F. Griffin, Chicago, National Printing & Eng. Co., Chicago, 1917, 26.25 x 39.25 inches. Poster is encapsulated in cardboard and acetate with masking tape. Not examined outside of encapsulation. According to consignor poster is not permanently mounted to the cardboard.

Condition A-: minor creases in image; pin holes at corners and edges; small tear at upper margin; two ink stamps in image. Paper. A young man in a suit (perhaps a student) is watching a column of soldiers marching past his window. "The window -- a poster within the poster -- separates the bright male world of waving flags and marching columns from the darkened interior feminine space . . . [exploiting] men's anxiety over their masculinity by suggesting the effeminacy of the man who does not enlist" (Paret p. 56). Paret 75, Rawls p. 82, Theofiles 10, Borkan p. 44, Picture This fig. 48.
