      James Bretherton (18th century) after Henry William Bunbury (1750 - 1811 ): Caricature, French courier on horseback, messenger on horseback, 18th century, Etching Technique: Hand colored Etching on Paper Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "HWBunbury Delin. / Js. Bretherton f.". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "Courier Francois". Date: 18th century Description: The colour print shows a dynamic scene with a messenger on horseback, drawn by William Bentley, the work is entitled "COURIER FRANCOIS". The rider, dressed in traditional costume, whips his horse into a full gallop. A rural landscape with a thatched hut and a striking, densely sheeted tree forms the background. The scene is probably an expression of the sense of haste and urgency in the transmission of news at the time.
