Carl Brenner oil on canvas landscape - Kentucky

      Est: -

Carl Brenner oil on canvas landscape - Kentucky Oil on canvas landscape signed in red to viewer's lower left, "Carl C. Brenner 1881". Dusk or dawn scene of an early house in the inevitable state of becoming a ruins. Two expanding large holes in the roof would seem to indicate abandonment. One might choose to read some symbolism into the composition which might shift depending whether morning or evening. An interesting aspect is there is a slight trail of smoke ascending from the chimney indicating a squatter is dwelling in a near ruins. As generally the case when Brenner's are found housed in their original frames, this a fine example where expense was not spared. An elaborate example in a fine state of preservation without restoration nor the need. The painting too in excellent condition having wide spaced craquelure as the sole issue. 12 ¼" x 22' framed to 24 ½" X 34 ½". Likely painted within the Kentucky region in 1881.

Carl Christian Brenner (German-American, 1838-1888), Landscape with Rock Formations

      Est: $2,000 - $4,000

Carl Christian Brenner (German-American, 1838-1888), Landscape with Rock Formations oil on artist's board, signed at lower right, presented in a period gilt frame with composition ornament. Panel 11 3/8 x 9 1/2 in.; Frame dimensions 19 1/4 x 17 1/2 in. Carl Christian Brenner was born in Bavaria. A teacher recognized Brenner's artistic ability at a young age and advocated for his admission to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Brenner's father refused to allow his son to enroll and trained him as a glazier. The Brenner family immigrated to the United States in 1853. After a brief few months in New Orleans, they settled in Louisville, Kentucky. For the next decade, Brenner found work as a glazier, house painter and sign painter. In 1863, Brenner was commissioned by the Masonic Hall of Louisville to paint a series of panoramic Civil War scenes. This encouraged Brenner to paint more landscapes of his adopted homeland. While the majority of his paintings depict areas around Louisville, Kentucky and Cumberland Mountains, he also traveled to Colorado, Washington, California and Oregon. Brenner exhibited frequently throughout his life, in the Louisville Industrial Exposition of 1874, the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition of 1876, and numerous annual exhibitions at the National Academy of Design and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. At the age of fifteen, Brenner immigrated to the United States, landing first at New Orleans in 1853. Nov. 17, 2019

Carl Christian Brenner - Cumberland Mountains Scene

      Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Carl Christian Brenner (American, 1838–1888) CUMBERLAND MOUNTAINS SCENE $4,000. – $6,000. Oil on canvas, 16” x 8” Signed, dated 1887 $4,000. – 6,000. Probably a scene in the Cumberland Mountains of southeastern Kentucky, given the topography depicted and the year painted. While most of Brenner’s oeuvre consists of the gently undulating landscape of the Louisville area covered in beech trees, he made several trips to the Rocky Mountains and the Cumberland Mountains to paint. His Rocky Mountain scenes are generally more towering sheets of rock, and his Cumberland scenes resemble the landscape depicted here. An article appearing August 23, 1887, in the Courier-Journal discusses the paintings Brenner was currently working on in his studio and focuses on a particular new painting in the Cumberlands. He most likely either would have recently visited the area or was working on several paintings in that series.
