Biography

Born in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, Patricia Brennan has studied sculpture both in Rome and in New York City. A graduate of the Ontario College of Art, with a Masters Degree in Studio Art from New York University, where she developed a mixed media process inspired by the I Ching or the Chinese Book of Change. The resulting work, called Blueprint Valleysweep, was seen at the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Galley in 1983. Resembling a 'monumental silicon chip', this work explores figure/landscape collages with photo-silkscreen printed directly onto white porcelain.

During the 1980's and 1990's, Patricia developed a systematic approach to mythologizing friends and acquaintances, producing the miniature diorama series Dancing Cow in St. Petersburgh and the theatrical sculpture installation Guardians & Arkangels From Earth. Guardians and Arkangel models came from the artistic milieu in which the artist was centred. The project won an Arts Abroad Grant from the Ontario Ministry of Culture & Communications to tour Russia in 1991.

In 1992/93, the exhibition was shown at the Grimsby Art Gallery and at Arcadia Art Gallery, Toronto. During that time, Canadian author Timothy Findley selected a portrait sculpture from the 'Guardian Series', for a Toronto Arts Council Protege Award. Arkangels From Earth was featured in an exhibition at the Art Gallery of Algoma for the 1996 Algoma Fall Festival. Collaborating with dancers and musicians from Toronto and Algoma, and native Ojibwe dancers and drummers to create a community workshop production of a new myth, Arkangel Drum Dance, which was performed at the White Pines Theatre, Sault Ste. Marie. The story and choreography were inspired from her Arkangel narratives and the discovery of a Great Lakes Dragon in the Agawa Canyon pictographs.

The Arkangels and Guardians continue in their mythic journey with the advent of this web site, titled The Arkangel Project.

From 1991 to 1994, Patricia Brennan served as Vice-President of the Sculptor's Society of Canada, and was a founding Director of the SSC's Canadian Sculpture Gallery in the First Canadian Place.
