In einem dunklen Innenraum sitzt eine alte Dame nach links auf einem hohen Stuhl, vor ihr auf dem Schoß ein weißes Tuch, auf dem eine flache glänzende Schale mit einem Fisch liegt. Sie hat andächtig ihre Hände vor der Brust gefaltet und scheint bei geöffnetem Mund gerade das Tischgebet zu sprechen. Mit ihren Augen blickt sie gedankenverloren zur Seite über die Speise hinweg. Quiringh Gerritsz. van Brekelenkam (Dutch, 1622-1668) Quiringh Gerritsz. van Brekelenkam (Dutch, 1622-1668) A lady with her maid in an interior dated '1664' l.r., oil on panel 45 x 35cm Provenance: Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 6 May 1997, lot 22; with Richard Green, London. Quirijn or Quiringh Gerritsz. van Brekelenkam was a Dutch Baroque genre painter. He probably trained with the celebrated Leiden fijnschilder Gerard Dou, and like Dou, he elevated everyday subjects to refined and elegant scenes. Although his first known painting is dated 1644, he was only admitted to the Leiden Guild for artists in 1648, living and working in the city until his death. This picture dates from Brekelenkam’s most productive period, between 1660 and 1664, when he painted higher quality pictures, and dated his works more frequently than before or after. The author Angelika Lasius suggests that this may have been because both Gabriel Metsu and Jan Steen had left Leiden, so that Brekelenkam had a more dominant position in the local market for genre pictures. Condition Report: overall: 59.5 x 49.5cm Appears to be in good order. Unexamined under UV light, for a full report please contact the department.

This charming portrait of a woman reading at a table can be counted among the rare portraits by Quiringh Gerritsz van Brekelenkam. The small panel is a wonderful example of his painterly talent. The image, built up using thin layers of colour and incorporating a finely painted Vanitas still life, is entirely in keeping with the Leiden "fijnschilder" tradition. On the table is a rosary with a black cross, which identifies the unknown woman as a Catholic. Brekelenkam himself was Catholic and worked for various Catholic patrons.

Oil on Canvas Painting Attributed to van Brekelenkam The Philosopher Quiringh Gerritsz. van Brekelenkam Size: 14 1/2 x 12 1/2 in. Frame: 20 x 17 3/4 in. Quirijn or Quiringh Gerritsz van Brekelenkam (1622/29, Zwammerdam - 1669/79, Leiden), was a Dutch Baroque genre painter. He probably studied under Gerard Dou, and as a result his paintings from the 1640s and 1650s are similar to those of the Leiden fijnschilders.
