"Brass and glass United States, circa 1948 Claire Falkenstein (1908-1998) Mid-century Modern Style Wire brooch with glass bead 4 ¼" x 2 ¾" (height x width) Good condition Provenance: Acquired by the current owner from the Halberstadt family, who were acquainted with Claire Falkenstein through a mutual association with The School of Design in Chicago. The pin was acquired from the artist sometime between 1945-1950. Distinctive of Falkenstein's style, this three-dimensional brooch is a buoyant structure that exemplifies her aesthetic of abstract free-forms which play with material, movement and space. The glass bead offers a visual point of interest to the airiness and whimsicality of the piece by anchoring the expansive voids created by the wire. The brooch is in good condition with slight spots of tarnishing and scratches throughout while the pin is in good working order. It measures 4 ¼" x 2 ¾" (height x width). Claire Falkenstein (1908-1997) Claire Falkenstein was an American sculptor best known for her large scale abstract and glass public sculptures. She grew up in a small Oregon community and later studied art at the University of California at Berkeley. During the 1930s and 1940s, she experimented with scientific forms and movable parts. She moved to Paris in 1950 where she met Alberto Giacometti, as well as a group of American artists including Paul Jenkins and Sam Francis. She created works with a sense of open spaces, working with the concept of the continuous void in nature. Her sculptural aesthetic lent itself to jewelry, which she produced from humble materials. She returned to Los Angeles in 1963, where she built a studio and was awarded several large-scale commissions, including the doors, stained glass windows and gates of St. Basil Catholic Church.
