        Charming early 20th century painting depicting a little brother peeping around a corner spying on a young courting couple in parlor as they sit on the sofa looking at a photo album; nearby table with lamp, box of chocolates and stereoviewer; signed lower left "Worth Brehm"; oil on paper mounted on masonite; 32"W, 33"H; painted wood frame 38"W, 39"H---Worth Brehm grew up in Noblesville, Indiana, and later moved to New York. He was known for his illustrations of children and created iconic images for national magazine covers and classic novels by drawing upon memories of his Indiana childhood. He had a series of drawings published in Outing Magazine in 1907-1909. His first Saturday Evening Post cover was in June, 1908. He followed this up with illustrations for a 1910 edition of Mark Twain's TOM SAWYER and a 1912 edition of HUCKLEBERRY FINN. He created many other illustrations for stories about young people. He was widely recognized for his work before his untimely death in 1928. (Inv. 1)

        Worth Brehm (1883-1928), "Wal-ef I Aint put them Shot in First!", chromolithograph, advertising poster for Church & Co's Arm & Hammer Soda, Copyright Church & Dwight Co,  25 x 16.75" Illustrator James Ellsworth "Worth" Brehm (b. 1883 - d. 1928) was a native of Hamilton County, Indiana. He graduated from Noblesville High School in 1902 and attended Indiana University, DePauw University, and the Herron Institute art school in Indianapolis. He and his older brother George, also an artist, worked for short time at the Indianapolis Star. Around 1905 the two Brehm brothers moved to New York where Worth attended the Art Students League. By 1907 Worth Brehm's work was appearing in national magazines. A June 1908 issue of School Arts magazine lists Worth Brehm, his brother George and another Indiana born artist Franklin Booth as instructors in the National School of Art in New York City for the Fall 1908 semester. Throughout his career Worth Brehm worked with American Magazine, Cosmopolitan, McClure's, Woman's Home Companion, Scribner's, Harper's Monthly Magazine, Century, Collier's and Good Housekeeping specializing in drawing pictures of young boys. In 1916 he illustrated Booth Tarkington's Penrod and Sam. Brehm died at age 44 in 1928 at Norwolk, Connecticut where he had been a resident of Silvermine, an artists' colony, for fifteen years.

"Worth" Brehm was a highly admired American book and magazine illustrator best known for his drawings of boys for Booth Tarkington's Penrod and Sam (1916) and Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1923). He studied at the Herron Institute art school in Indianapolis and The Art Students' League in New York City, and taught at the National School of Art also in New York. His brother George Brehm was also a well known illustrator. This picture appeared in the magazine serialization of Penrod and Sam , but not in the published book.
