Breenbergh (Bartholomeus, Deventer 1598-1657 Amsterdam). Italianate Landscape * Breenbergh (Bartholomeus, Deventer 1598-1657 Amsterdam). Italianate Landscape with soldiers and hunting dogs going, early morning, oil on wood panel, showing a group of soldiers and hunting dogs on a path, with buildings on a rocky outcrop and distant view of the Apennine mountains, with printed red label to verso of Thos. Agnew & Sons Ltd. bearing the number W.O. 0668-73, and printed label for Christie's Old Master Paintings and Sculpture sale, December 2019, lot 208, the wood panel with chamfered edges to verso, 26 x 38.5 cm (10 1/4 x 15 1/8 ins), old ebonised wood frame QTY: (1) NOTE: Provenance: with E. T. Parker & Co., Bristol by 1914; with Thos. Agnew & Sons Ltd.; Professor Michael Jaffé (1923-1997); thence by descent; Christie's, London, Old Master Paintings and Sculpture for December 2019, lot 208. Bartholomeus Breenbergh lived and worked in Rome from 1619, where he was influenced by the Italian landscapes of his older compatriot Cornelis van Poelenburgh. He was one of the founder members of the society of Dutch and Flemish artists in Rome, the Bentvueghels (Birds of a Feather), or Schildersbent (Band of Painters), by whom he was nicknamed Het Fret (The Ferret). Breenbergh's use of the panoramic landscape with dramatic contrasts of light and shade, and buildings drenched in sunlight (as in the present work) influenced the French landscape painter Claude Lorrain, who arrived in Rome around the same time.

29 x 48 cm. In dekorativem Rahmen. Idyllische harmonische Landschaftsdarstellung in überwiegend weicher Farbgebung.

BREENBERGH, BARTHOLOMEUS 1599 Deventer - 1659 Mountainous Landscape with Tobias and the Angel. Oil on wood. 21,5 x 21 cm. Signed lower right: B. Breenbergh f. / 1635 (?). Framed. Verso: - Two inventory numbers in ink and paint and illegible note on the wood - On the frame label with handwritten inventory number and artist's name Provenance: - Private collection Graf Wolff Metternich, Bonn Bartholomeus Breenbergh was born in 1599/1600 in the Dutch Deventer and moved to Rome while still young, where he was educated by the painter Paul Bril. After his return to Amsterdam he painted for the most part small, biblical and antique-mythological scenes in landscaped surroundings of exceptionally high quality. A well-made example for this is the painting with Tobias and the angel in front a mountainous riverscape and ruins, which is presented here. On his long and perilous way to Gabael the young Tobias is accompanied and protected by the angel. Particularly the subtlety of the execution and the successful compostion bear witness to Breenbergh's mastery. A similar work with the identical topic from 1630 can be found in the Eremitage, St. Petersburg. The story of Tobias from the doctrinal Book Tobit in the Old Testament is shown in various versions by art history with the archangel Raphael. Through the role of the guardian, which the archangel Raphael takes over for young Tobias, he becomes his attribute. In the 15th and 16th century a real torrent of archangel paintings initiates, especially in Italy, which experiences its height in ca. 1480 with the painting "Tobias and the Angel" (National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.). Due to his longtime stay in Italy Breengergh will most probably have known this and other image types.

      Bartholomeus Breenbergh (1598-1657), Neptun und

      Est: €4,000 - €7,000

Bartholomeus Breenbergh (1598-1657), Neptun und Coronis, oil on wooden panel. Cracks, minor scratches, small panel cracks.  Literature: Coronis, daughter of Phlegyas, King of the Lapiths, was one of Apollo's lovers. While Apollo was away, Coronis, already pregnant with Asclepius, fell in love with Ischys, son of Elatus. A white crow which Apollo had left to guard her informed him of the affair and Apollo, enraged that the bird had not pecked out Ischys' eyes as soon as he approached Coronis, flung a curse upon it so furious that it scorched its feathers, which is why all crows are black. Apollo sent his sister, Artemis, to kill Coronis because he could not bring himself to. Afterward Apollo, feeling dejected, only regained his presence of mind when Coronis' body was already aflame on a funeral pyre. Upon a sign from Apollo, Hermes cut the unborn child out of her womb and gave it to the centaur Chiron to raise. Hermes then brought her soul to Tartarus. Additional Information: Marcel Roethlisberger had viewed the painting from a photo and meant "This painting is for sure from the circle of Bartholomeus Breenberg. There are known examples by the same hand and it is possible to assume that it is by Breenberg" (summary of a written correspondence). 33,5x51cm
