FERDINAND MAX BREDT (German 1860-1921) A PAINTING, "Seated Nude, Reading," 1913,

      Est: $1,000 - $2,000

FERDINAND MAX BREDT (German 1860-1921) A PAINTING, "Seated Nude, Reading," 1913, oil on wood panel, signed and dated L/R, "F.M. Bredt;" 16" x 12 1/2", framed 22" x 19". Note: Everlasting fondness of the female figure churns the perpetuity of art. The German artist Ferdinand Max Bredt upheld that torch with pride during the late Victorian era. A consummate voyeur of both the feminine and the orient, his oeuvre belies an ability to capture explicit beauty while interweaving continental fantasy of the orient. A well traveled artist, Bredt's penchant for harem, bathing and erotic scenes belie popular Victorian taste at the turn of the century. Bredt paints in the present painting a pleasant woman, her exotic nakedness fills the eye with gleaming pools of waxen skin. She reads a fashion magazine; a juxtaposition to her nudity. In a nod to his Germanic heritage, her strawberry color hair is braided neatly revealing her nape of her neck. Ocher and green pigments dominate the painting. A classic work by the artist, Bredt's painting could be used as a visual definition of the aesthetic of late Victorian era eroticsm.  Provenance: Lot 1215, August 21, 2014, Discovery, Skinner
