              Brecht, George: Water Yam

              Est: €300 - €450

Brecht, George. Water Yam. – Exlibris; einige Karten minimal stockfleckig, sonst wohlerhalten.

In the 1940s, he studied at the College of Pharmacy and Science in Philadelphia and worked as a chemist and engineer until the mid-1960s. In 1958 and 1959 he attended the course ‘Experimental Composition’ by John Cage at the New School for Social Research in New York. In 1959 he participated in the first Fluxus actions. Since 1965 he lived near Nice, operating there the business ‘La cédille qui sourit’ along with Robert Filliou. 1966 was followed by the establishment of the ‘Non-École de Villefrance’. In the late 1960s Brecht worked as a professor at the College of Art and Design in Leeds. Brecht created especially ready-mades and ‘Event objects’ consisting of found objects whose consideration should create an ‘event’ for art lovers. In 1970 Brecht moved to Düsseldorf and two years later to Cologne. In the 1980s he ceased his artistic activities and worked on books, compositions and films. Brecht has exhibited at the documenta 5, 6 and 8 in Kassel. In 2006 he was awarded the Berlin Art Prize at the Akademie der Künste. Ex-collection Barry McCallion, of the Fluxus Movement, New York. Fluxus, active from the early 1960s through the late 1970s, was an avant-garde, multimedia artistic movement founded by Lithuanian-born George Maciunas (1931-1978). With ideological ties to Dadaism, Fluxus utilized a myriad of mediums, including performance art, music, found material, ephemera and poetry, with the idea of making art accessible and negating its highfalutin, elitist status. Fluxus artists combined art with the everyday experience, effectively embuing everything with the potential to be art and everyone with the capacitiy to understand, interact with and experience it. The use of ephemeral objects, such as the contents of Fluxkits, emphasizes the fleeting nature of existence (the flux) that these artists aimed to capture and celebrate.
