Claudio Bravo (Chilean, 1936-2011) Ramo de Olmo (Branch of Elm Tree), 1992 oil on canvas signed CLAUDIO BRAVO and dated (lower left) 16 1/4 x 13 inches. Provenance: Marlborough, New York (stock no. 31.969) Lot note: "In my experiments with still life it occurs to me that my art really does look very modern; it sometimes almost looks abstract."  -Claudio Bravo Virtuoso artist Claudio Bravo was influenced by the art of the Renaissance in its emphasis on portraiture that reflected both the social position and the temperament of the sitter, as well as Baroque light and the dream-like pastiches of the Surrealist movement, to hone a style both particularly searing and particularly his own. Born in Valparaíso, Chile, Bravo left his family ranch to study at the Colegio San Ignacio in Santiago, where he would gift portraits to his teachers to raise his grades. The school administration took notice, and far from punishing this cheeky behavior, in reflection of his talent, they instead paid for him to study art professionally from ages 11 to 20, the only formal training he would ever receive. His hyper-realist style developed, as Chile remained relatively untouched by the throes of Modernism that were concurrently spreading throughout Latin America.    Bravo had his first solo show at the age of 17 – in which everything sold -- and would go on to produce over 500 works throughout his six-decade career. A young Bravo dabbled in poetry, professional dancing, and acting, before deciding to dedicate himself to his art full time and beginning to produce the commissioned portraits that would help make his name. Bravo saved his earnings from these commissions and bought a ticket to sail to Paris, but the journey was fraught with storms and Bravo was forced to disembark in Barcelona, eventually making his way to Madrid, where he stayed. It was in Madrid that Bravo was able to establish himself as a society portraitist. It was also in Madrid that he encountered the Spanish Baroque painters at the Prado Museum, particularly Francisco de Zurbarán, which left an indelible mark on him. In 1968, the leader of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos, extended the invitation to paint him and his wife in 1968, and the six-month trip allowed for a transformation in Bravo’s work as he found the quality of light to be far more intense there than even his native Chile. Indeed, Bravo’s mastery of light and unerring eye for detail throughout his oeuvre has drawn comparisons to the works of classical masters, including Caravaggio, the father of chiaroscuro himself.    Ramo de Olmo (Branch of Elm Tree), 1992, masterfully reveals Bravo’s skill at using light that transcends and magnifies reality. Softly filtered light casts a vintage glow on the bouquet of elm branches and blossoms, yet details such as the pitted wood along the bar and fallen bud on its edge, places the work firmly in the world. The cropped view and encircling curtains further create a sense of cloistered calm. The treatment of light makes the objects appear more as they are, with a greater substance than mere appearances. As Christian Viveros Faune, writer and curator, notes about the artist’s work, “Rather than fool the eye into believing they represent the real, Bravo's pictures, especially the still lifes, hold us by their unreality. It is ultimately the highly conceptualized and willfully formalized character of their fiction, their elaborate artifice that draws us into them” (C. Viveros-Fauné, "Claudio Bravo,"  Art Nexus, Nov. 1998-Jan. 1999, vol. 30, no. 147).  The Marlborough Gallery hosted its first exhibition of Bravo’s works in 1981, the first of dozens in the next twenty years. Collected internationally by renowned institutions, Bravo was arguably the most prestigious Chilean painter of his time, until his sudden death at his home in Taroudant, Morrocco in 2011. His legacy of especially introspective still lifes, deployed with a fascinating hyper-realistic style, emphasize that of a true Renaissance man.

          Est: €4,000 - €5,000

CLAUDIO BRAVO CAMUS (Valparaiso 1936 - Taroudant, Morocco 2011). "Lirio", 1945. Oil on panel. Signed and dated in the lower area. Provenance: private collection of the artist. Measures: 31 x 18.5 cm. A lily is the protagonist of this sober and elegant image in which the artist dignifies the flower not only by eliminating any superfluous detail from the scene but also because he starts from the natural measurements of the lily, thus creating a play between reality and its representation. The detailed technical care with which the artist painstakingly reproduces the flower reveals the great knowledge of the artist, who starts from an imaginary inspired by the works of Dürer and by the Baroque still-life tradition. The presence of the purple lily is usually seen in Bravo's still lifes such as "Lirio tingitane", 1990, or "Flores" from 1984. However, in this particular case he dispenses with the scenography and gives all the prominence to a single flower in which drawing and colour merge to create a lily that stands out for its volume and three-dimensionality. Born into a wealthy family of Chilean landowners, from a very early age he was clear about his artistic vocation and his refusal to take part in the family business, despite his father's insistence on his first son. He studied at a religious school and although he eventually rejected all the Catholic dogmas he had learned as a child, he always retained a certain interest in the mysterious aspects of religious life and a fascination for the lives of the saints. His style was influenced by classical and Renaissance perfection, as can be seen in the work we present here. He had his first exhibition at the Salon 13 in Santiago de Chile in 1954 at the age of 18. He discovers the surrealism of Dalí, whose influence will be palpable in some of his future works, but always with a personal imprint. He achieved a certain fame in Latin America and Europe as a portrait painter, a genre he never abandoned as, although he began to find it boring, it provided him with economic stability and an important social status. In 1961 he finally left Chile and arrived in Spain, settling in the capital of Madrid, where he continued to cultivate fame and fortune until the early 1970s, when he finally headed for Tangiers, captivated, as he explained, by the unequalled light and climate. In 1981 he held his first exhibition at the Marlborough Gallery in New York, a gallery that has represented him internationally ever since, and in 1994 he held a major solo exhibition at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, which became one of the most popular in history. For his merits and artistic contributions, he was granted Spanish nationality by the Spanish Council of Ministers on 1 July 2002.

CLAUDIO BRAVO CAMUS (Valparaiso 1936 - Taroudant, Morocco 2011). Untitled, 1950. Charcoal and white pencil on paper. Framed with museum glass. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 70 x 125 cm; 95 x 152 cm (frame). The sensuality of this evocative work completely dominates the composition. A nude woman in a complex foreshortening is shown before the viewer completely oblivious to him. Her delicate and feminine anatomy is defined by a truthful volume, although not without a lack of transcendent idealization towards a classical beauty. The marked volumes, through the use of shadows and light, provide three-dimensionality to this body that seems to float in a light space, where the ideal is the woman's body as a concept, not a concrete woman, since we do not see her face, but the symbol of the feminine. The precision of the drawing and the technical quality of the work create a great game between reality and the imaginative that keeps the viewer expectant before the visual paradox posed by the author, a recurring feature in the work of Claudio Bravo. Born into a wealthy family of Chilean landowners, from an early age he had a clear artistic vocation and did not want to be part of the family business despite his father's insistence on his first son. He studied in a religious school and although with age he rejected all the Catholic dogmas learned in his childhood, he always had a certain interest in the mysterious aspects of religious life and a fascination for the lives of the saints. His style is influenced by classical and Renaissance perfection, as can be seen in the work we present here. He had his first exhibition at the Salon 13 in Santiago de Chile in 1954 at the age of 18. He discovers Dalí's surrealism, whose influence will be palpable in some of his future works, but always with a personal imprint. He obtains certain fame in Latin America and Europe as a portrait painter, a genre that he will never abandon since, in spite of the fact that he began to find it boring, it provided him with economic stability and an important social status. In 1961 he finally left Chile and arrived in Spain, settling in the capital of Madrid where he continued to cultivate fame and fortune until the beginning of the 70's when, finally, he headed for Tangiers, captivated, as he explained, by an incomparable light and climate. In 1981 he held his first exhibition at the Marlborough Gallery in New York, a gallery that has represented him internationally ever since, and in 1994 he held a major solo exhibition at the National Museum of Fine Arts, which became one of the most attended in history. For his merits and artistic contributions, he was granted Spanish nationality by the Spanish Council of Ministers on July 1, 2002.

Claudio Bravo (Chilean, 1936-2011), Miss Piglet Signed and dated MCMXCI bottom right, pastel on paper. 26 x 20 in. (66 x 50.8cm) Provenance "American and Latin American Art," Sotheby's Arcade, December 19, 2003, lot 1199.   Property from a Newport, Rhode Island Estate. Lot Essay A celebrated Chilean painter, Claudio Bravo was renowned for his hyperrealist still lifes and figurative painting. He received no formal artistic training but was influenced by Baroque and Surrealist styles. Often blurring the line between reality and illusion, Bravo captured everyday objects and scenes with astonishing precision. He found early success in portraiture, painting numerous prominent political figures, including the Marcos Presidential family of the Philippines and Spanish dictator Francisco Franco. Bravo’s portraits appealed to the conservative Spanish public under Franco’s rule. In addition to portraiture, Bravo would also paint sitters' pets, often adding trompe l'oeil elements to the work which would later become his signature. Inspired by packages brought over by his sitters, Bravo began a fascination with the forms and texture of paper. His signature works depicted crumpled paper, paper bags and paper-wrapped packages tied with string. The popularity of these works freed him from the need to take portrait commissions and prompted him to move to New York where he achieved new levels of artistic acclaim. In 1970, Bravo had his first exhibition at the Staempfli Gallery in New York and received rave reviews. His works are held various permanent collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art.

Claudio Bravo (Chilean, 1936-2011) La Colombiana, 1978 oil on canvas signed CLAUDIO BRAVO and dated (lower right) 31 7/8 x 39 3/8 inches. The Collection of Philip and Judith Sieg, Bellefonte, Pennsylvania Provenance: The Artist Marlborough Gallery, New York Acquired from the above by the present owners, 1989 Lot note: Virtuoso artist Claudio Bravo was influenced by the art of the Renaissance in its emphasis on portraiture that reflected both the social position and the temperament of the sitter, as well as Baroque light and the dream-like pastiches of the Surrealist movement, to hone a style both particularly searing and particularly his own. Bravo had his first solo show at the age of 17 - in which everything sold -- and would go on to produce over 500 works throughout his six-decade career. He was in awe of designer Cristóbal Balenciaga, whose works he believed to have a Renaissance quality. He would even force the women of nobility he painted to purchase a Balenciaga piece before he agreed to paint them. The leader of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos, extended the invitation to paint him and his wife in 1968, and the six-month trip allowed for a transformation in Bravo's work as he found the quality of light to be far more intense there than even his native Chile. Indeed, Bravo's mastery of light and unerring eye for detail throughout his oeuvre has drawn comparisons to the works of classical masters, including Caravaggio, the father of chiaroscuro himself. By the time he returned to Madrid, Bravo's reputation had gained international renown, with his first exhibition in New York at the Staempfli Gallery in 1970. Seeking solitude away from his busy social life in Madrid, Bravo moved to Tangier, Morocco in 1972. The bold colors, geometric patterns, and deep history of the African town, so unfamiliar to him, was an inspiration and he painted just about anyone who would sit still for him - mostly workers on his house and their friends. Islamic women would not pose for him, however, prompting him to buy apartments in Madrid and New York to keep his options expansive. It is during these years rotating through Tangier that Bravo painted the present work, La Colombiana, 1978, a close-cropped scene of a Colombian woman, one leg folded casually underneath her as she sinks into a yellow couch. Despite the ethnic origin of the woman defined by the work's title, it is Morocco's almost theatrical influence that can be seen in the richly hued yellow couch and crisp blues of her denim. With a collection of cards scattered next to her, and then clutched more loosely in her hand, she seems relaxed yet distant in thought. Bravo's signature perspectival focus brings the gaze directly onto the plane, forcing the viewer to examine the subject without distraction and engage with her emotional state. The Marlborough Gallery hosted its first exhibition of Bravo's works in 1981, the first of dozens in the next twenty years. Collected internationally by renowned institutions, Bravo was arguably the most prestigious Chilean painter of his time, until his sudden death at his home in Taroudant, Morrocco in 2011. His legacy of especially introspective portraits in lush surroundings, deployed with a fascinating hyper-realistic style, emphasize that of a true Renaissance man.
