George Braun (1541 - 1622), chierico di Colonia, è stato il principale curatore del “Civitates Orbis Terrarum”, per la prima volta pubblicato a Colonia nel 1572, poi edito ad Anversa e a Colonia fino al 1618, anno in cui apparve il sesto e ultimo volume. The front mentions were loosely translated to “The Imperial Vlma in the Sueuia was famous for its strong water and wall surrounding the magnificent temple and the propitiation of the Danube” There is also on the back of this map a few paragraphs in Latin that were not translated. Cologne, 1574 (Second State). 28" x 32" framed "THE MOST IMPORTANT OF THE SURVIVING EARLY MAP-VIEWS OF LONDON" (Howgego). The map of London was updated in 1574 with 'Westmester' changed to 'Westmuster' and with the addition of the newly built Royal Exchange. The map was drawn at least 15 years prior to publication, since it shows the spire of St Paul's, which was destroyed by lightning in 1561 and not reconstructed.
