    • ROSS BRAUGHT Mako Sica (Tchaikovsky's Sixth).
      May. 11, 2023

ROSS BRAUGHT Mako Sica (Tchaikovsky's Sixth).

      Est: $3,000 - $5,000

ROSS BRAUGHT Mako Sica (Tchaikovsky's Sixth). Lithograph, 1934. 327x360 mm; 12 7/8x14 1/4 inches, full margins. Edition of 20. Signed, dated and titled in pencil, lower margin. A very good impression. Braught (1898-1983), called the "greatest living American draftsman" by Thomas Hart Benton, was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia where he was awarded the William Emlem Cresson Memorial Traveling Scholarship in 1921 allowing him to travel studying art throughout Europe. When he returned from this sojourn, he began his career as an artist, exhibiting along the East Coast. In 1928, he moved to Woodstock, New York, becoming a member of the local art colony. While there, Braught developed an interest in lithography from Grant Arnold who also printed lithographs by Yasuo Kuniyoshi and other members of the colony. In 1931, the Great Depression forced Braught to move west to Kansas City, Missouri, for work, where he served as the head of the painting department at the Kansas City Art Institute. He persuaded the institution to buy a lithography press, and, with his students, he experimented further with the medium. He traveled throughout the west during his time off, visiting the Grand Canyon, the Colorado Rockies and the Dakota Badlands. Inspired by the Badlands, he composed the painting Tchaikovsky's Sixth and its companion lithograph Mako Sica (the Lakota name for the Badlands of South Dakota), a turning point in his career where he pivoted to broader forms, less detail and more muted, earth-tone colors. In 1936, he resigned from his position in Kansas City and moved to Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, but later returned to the school and was the chairman of the painting department and acting dean of the school.

      Ross Braught, New York, Missouri (1898 - 1983), Kingston Ten Miles, 1931, lithograph, 25"H x 19"W (sight), 28 x 22 (mat)

      Est: $500 - $700

Ross Braught New York, Missouri, (1898 - 1983) Kingston Ten Miles, 1931 lithograph Titled lower left, signed and dated lower right. Edition 5/15. Biography from David Cook Galleries: Ross Eugene Braught, Born Pennsylvania, 1898. Died Pennsylvania, 1983. In the early 1920's, Ross Braught began studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. While at the Academy, he studied under Daniel Garber. In 1921 he was awarded the prestigious Emlem Cresson Memorial Traveling Scholarship. Under the scholarship, he traveled to England and to Italy where he spent time in Florence and Venice. In 1923, the artist married and the couple made their home in Upper Black Eddy, Delaware until 1928. During this time Braught exhibited regularly at galleries including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., and Dudensing Galleries, New York where he had a one-man show. Braught moved to Woodstock, New York, in 1928 where he became a member of the Woodstock art colony. In 1931, the artist was in debt and took a job as the head of the painting department at the Kansas City Art Institute. He taught studio classes between 1931 and 1936 at the Institute and traveled during the summer months on sketching trips to the Dakota Badlands, the Grand Canyon, and the Colorado Rockies. Braught left the Art Institute in 1936 and was replaced by Thomas Hart Benton, who regarded Braught as "probably the greatest draftsman of his generation". He went to the island of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. Later that year, he accepted a position at Cornell University where he taught for three years. Late in 1939, Braught returned with his family to Tortola taking up residence in a hotel for seven years. During this time he traveled to Dutch Guiana to gather material for a mural he was working on at Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico. In 1946, Braught returned to the Kansas City Art Institute where he taught until 1962. It is not known whether he retired from the Institute or was fired. However, he moved to Philadelphia leaving his wife in Kansas City. After the move back to Philadelphia until his death in 1983, Braught seemed to disappear. He had no contact with family and friends many of whom tried unsuccessfully to locate him. The only known address was a post office box and, aside from some pieces he sent to a Kansas City Art Institute exhibition in the early 1960's, he did not show his work.

Ross Braught (NY/MO, 1898-1983), "Village Well"

      Est: $1,000 - $3,000

graphite on wove paper, signed and dated at lower right "Ross Braught 1946 / Suriname" and titled at lower left "(illegible) Lower Well," matted but unframed. Paper 21 x 27 7/8 in. Braught was formerly trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he studied with Daniel Garber. Following a study abroad, he exhibited frequently throughout the 1920s at the Pennsylvania Academy, the National Academy of Design, the Corcoran Gallery, and the Society of Independent Artists. In 1931 he and his family settled in Kansas City where he accepted a position in the art department at the Kansas City Art Institute. It was here that he met Thomas Hart Benton, who called him "the greatest living draughtsman." By the mid 1930s, Braught, an unusual and mystic person, left the United States for more tropical and exotic locales. It was in these wild jungles he created some of his most intriguing and technically impressive work, of which this drawing is a strong example. From the collection of Thomas Hart Benton and Rita Piacenza Benton From a Maryland Collection Illustrated in THE WORK OF OUR FRIENDS: THE COLLECTION OF THOMAS HART BENTON AND RITA PIACENZA BENTON, Aaron Galleries, Chicago, IL
