Frank Brangwyn Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Etcher, Lithographer, b. 1867 - d. 1956

Born in 1867, polymath and artist, Frank Brangwyn finished a staggering number of works of art in his lifetime. Brangwyn apprenticed briefly with William Morris, with whom he shared multiple skills and talents. Believing that an artist should be able to "turn his hand to anything", painter Frank Brangwyn used a variety of media, including stained glass, ceramics, and furniture. Brangwyn was known for introducing experimental, pioneering ideas to the art world. Famous for his themed panels British Empire, Brangwyn was the first artist to have a Royal Academy exhibition in his lifetime. A fresh assessment of artist Frank Brangwyn's work in recent years has caused a revival of interest, with exhibitions in London, Paris and New York's Rockefeller Centre. Fortunately, Frank Brangwyn etching prints for sale have become available. Discover other art and etching prints for your collection at Invaluable.

Pink cherry blossom in bowl foreground, pale chrysanthemum patterned panel behind her left and plain peacock blue panel right.Very Whistlerian and obviously Japanese in 'quotation' mode. Unusual for Brangwyn, not only because he painted few portraits, but also because the lady is quite beautiful and the painting sympathetic to the female figure. The work was initially known as Lady in a Kimono until The Fine Art Society suggested that it was a portrait of Lucy Ray, Brangwyn's wife.Lucy Ray was born in 1870 in Stantonbury, Buckinghamshire so she would have been 23 in 1893 which accords with the sitter. She married Brangwyn on the 28th January 1896 at the Registry Office, St George's, Hanover Square, London, when she was 26 and Brangwyn was 29. The marriage certificate described her as a nurse. Unfortunately there are very few close up photographs of Lucy - one was taken in Longpré, France in 1896 and the other is undated.Very little is known about Lucy. Much was written about Brangwyn and his work during his lifetime, most of it 'purple prose', but very little biographical, except Philip Macer-Wright's book Brangwyn. A Study of Genius at Close Quarters. published in 1940. The reliability of the book is debateable, but he does quote Brangwyn as stating that 'sheer laziness had prevented him from making portraits of his wife'. Laziness was not one of Brangwyn's characteristics but one would have thought he'd recall painting her before they were married.Comparing the known photographs of Lucy with the portrait Horner argues that the sitter is unlikely to be Lucy, who had a much longer face, a wide mouth with thin lips and different shaped eyebrows. Whether we will ever know for sure who the sitter is remains a mystery. We are grateful to Dr Libby Horner for her assistance with cataloguing this lot.

Brangwyn (Frank, 1867-1956). Les Villes Tentaculaires, 1919 AR * Brangwyn (Frank, 1867-1956). Les Villes Tentaculaires, 1919, a collection of 36 artist's proofs for Émile Verhaeren's collection of poems La Ville Tentaculaires, engravings on ivory laid japon, of which three are signed, some with titles in pencil, all with large margins, sheet sizes 29.2 x 23 cm (and smaller), most tipped (top or left edge) into individual window mounts, the whole contained in a near contemporary handmade cardboard slipcase (some wear), with ink manuscript labels on spine QTY: (1) NOTE: Provenance: From the Brangwyn family estate in Belgium. '[Les Villes Tentaculaires was Verhaeren's] most ruggedly powerful book of poetry. Although this ends with a statement of faith in science, it is a deeply pessimistic collection, a thrilled and hallucinatory account of the desecration of nature by machinery. This theme would present an appropriate challenge to Brangwyn, a negative counterpart to his vital imagery of man the worker, and his finished illustrations demonstrate how successfully he demonstrated it.' Provenance The artist, from whom commissioned by The Cooling Galleries Ltd., London With Thompson's Gallery, Aldeburgh, where purchased by Private Collection Their sale; Woolley & Wallis, Sailsbury, 26 August 2020, lot 254, where purchased by the present owner Frank Brangwyn was born in Bruges, Belgium, to an English father and a Welsh mother. In 1874, the family relocated to London, where his father found work as a designer of buildings, embroideries, and furniture. Despite having little formal education, Brangwyn was mentored by three influential figures in design at the turn of the century: Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo, William Morris, and Siegfried Bing. Brangwyn was an independent artist, known for his experimentation and innovation across a vast array of mediums and scales. His body of work includes murals, oil paintings, watercolours, etchings, woodcuts, lithographs, and designs for architecture, interiors, stained glass, furniture, carpets, ceramics, jewellery, book illustrations, bookplates, and commercial posters. It’s estimated that he produced over 12,000 works during his lifetime. Pont Vieux (Old Bridge) in Albi, France, constructed in 1035, is one of the oldest bridges in the country, reflecting its medieval origins and strategic importance in facilitating trade and movement over the Tarn River. Its robust stone construction and series of enduring arches highlight the skill of its builders. Over the centuries, the bridge has undergone modifications and repairs to maintain its structural integrity, ensuring its preservation as a historical monument. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010, Pont Vieux is a significant cultural and tourist attraction, offering scenic views of Albi’s skyline, including the Sainte-Cécile Cathedral. Primarily serving pedestrians today, the bridge remains a symbol of Albi’s rich history and heritage, linking the present to its medieval past. Ongoing conservation efforts focus on preserving its structural integrity while respecting its historical significance, ensuring it remains a treasured landmark for future generations.
