Peter Johann Brandl (1668-1735) - attributed to Mary with Child

          Est: €2,000 - €4,000

With her left arm, Mary holds the sleeping infant Jesus, who rests his head on her shoulders. Her legs rest on the straw of the cot. In her hand, the child holds a small wooden cross, a reference to the later Passion. Mary looks down at her son with her head bowed and lifts the white cloth with her free hand. The light falling from the top left hits Mary's forehead and her shimmering blonde hair, while the shadow on her face is brightened by reddish reflections. The infant Jesus, whose head is surrounded by a halo, lies in the full light. Mary's blue cloak, which is pulled over the top of her head, adds a cool colour accent to the picture. At the top left, two putti heads appear in the darkness of the night, gazing at the miracle of Christ's birth. A related composition by Peter Brandl can be found in the Muzeum hlavního města Praha (The City of Prague Museum). Oil on canvas, 32 × 26 cm

Attributed to Petr Brandl (1668-1735). Head of an Apostle

          Est: £700 - £1,000

Attributed to Petr Brandl (1668-1735). Head of an Apostle * Attributed to Petr Brandl (1668-1735). Head of an Apostle, circa 1700, oil on canvas, head and shoulders portrait of a bearded older man wearing a heavy coat, face in half-profile to the left, areas of craquelure, very small chip (5 x 4 mm) to paint surface at top of head, heavily varnished, re-lined, canvas size 55.5 x 45.5 cm (22 x 18 ins), later gilt frame with framer’s label to verso (69 x 57 cm) QTY: (1) NOTE: A painter of the late Baroque, Petr Brandl was famous in his lifetime, but due to isolation behind the Iron Curtain rather forgotten until recently. A major collection of his work is held in the National Gallery of Prague, and the gallery is currently holding a major exhibition of Brandl’s work, Petr Brandl: The Story of a Bohemian. His work often employs strong chiaroscuro, areas of heavy impasto and very plastic as well as dramatic figures; he often modelled figures in clay before committing to canvas. The Head of an Apostle is typical of Brandl’s work - a full beard and a lined face, accentuated with the help of thick layers of paints, applied with energetic brushstrokes that help to capture the strong use of chiaroscuro. He painted numerous similar portraits of Apostles and Evangelists, including The Apostle Paul (National Gallery of Prague ascension number O 557), Simeon with the Infant Jesus (O 578), and Bust of a Discoursing Apostle (O 12889), all held in the collection of the National Gallery of Prague. The Apostle Paul is illustrated in Guide to the Picture Gallery of Prague Castle by Jaromir Neumann, number 65, page 67. We are grateful to Sir Timothy Clifford for the attribution and note for this lot.

Pieter Jan Brandl (1660/68-1735/39) zugeschr., 'Apostel Petrus' / 'Apostle Peter', um 1685-1695

          Est: €390 - €780

Jahrhunderts vorausdeuten. + Technique: oil on coniferous wood, Signature: signed 'Brandl' on verso, Dimensions: 22 x 16,5 cm, Condition: good, wooden panel min. arched, no cracks, Comment: The Prague-born painter of history and saints already acquired excellent technical skills in his youth (1685-1691) as a pupil of the Prague court painter Christian Schröder/ Schröter. Here he enjoyed a certain reputation for the completion of ecclesiastical commissions and portraits in the manner of a Skreta. Afterwards he worked in monasteries and castles. In 1694 he became a member of the Altstädter Malerzeche. It is estimated that he painted no less than 500 altarpieces during this period. (see ADB, 1876, vol. 3, p. 237). The theme of the apostles (Peter, Paul) in larger formats on canvas and a looser, freer style and a touching naturalness and humanisation of the saints characterise his late work. His 'Saint Peter' on canvas, 75 x 58.5 cm, shows the Peter motif in a manner that already points ahead to the sensitivity of the mid-18th century.

          PITTORE GENOVESE DEL XVII-XVIII SECOLO

          Est: €2,000 - €3,000

Barocco in chiaroscuro 2020). Bibliografia di riferimento: C. Manzitti, Genua Tempu fa, Monaco 1997, ad vocem M. An old monk or hermit with a white beard holds a crucifix in his hands and, with his gaze fixed on the crucified one, is lost in contemplation. So far it has not been possible to determine who this worthy old man is. The posture corresponds to depictions of St. Johannes Nepomuk, who is shown younger, with a short beard and in the clothes of a canon. The face is haunted, the beard and scalp hair are characterized with virtuosity with dynamic brushstrokes of different widths in different gray and white tones.

Petr Jan Brand was a Czech painter, one of the main representatives of the High Baroque in Bohemia. The early period of his work is due to the common period approach to Baroque painting. It uses dynamic and elegant compositions. With artistic maturity, his work acquires characteristic features. The paintings are often characterized by a spatial effect, which is achieved by strokes of a thick paste of paint. The picture shows a woman trying to give love to strange children. From the Latin term, Caritas means love

PETER BRANDL, A SAINT WITH A SKULL A SAINT WITH A SKULL Verso with the remains of a varnish seal. Despite the small scale of the painting it still displays the dynamic monumentality typical of Peter Brandl's work. The frontality of the figure, the dramatic gesture and turn of the head, the strong colours and the theatrical highlighting of the book are all evident in other paintings of saints by this artist, such as the "Saint Jerome" in the Mährischen Galerie in Brünn. The artist, who was one of the main representatives of Bohemian late Baroque, was born in Prague and taught there by the court painter Christian Schröder, and thus his sphere of influence mainly extended over Prague and Bohemia.

BRANDL Petr (1668 - 24. 9. 1735 Kutna Hora) The Holy Family with Saint John the Baptist Oil on canvas, 107 x 84 cm, undated [circa 1730], unsigned, relined at the end of the 19th century. The painting depicts the Holy Family with Saint John the Baptist. In the centre of the composition is the three-quarter length seated figure of the Virgin wearing a red dress and blue cloak. She is holding the naked Infant Jesus with her right hand on her lap; he is sitting on white drapery. The Infant is leaning towards Saint John the Baptist who is kissing his left foot. Saint John the Baptist is wearing brown drapery around his shoulders and is holding a cross with the inscription ""ECCE AGNUS DEI"" in his left hand Saint Joseph is depicted as a middle-aged man in brown clothes on the left and leaning towards the group in the centre, he is holding a lily in his right hand and his left hand is raised in an expressive gesture. There is a large decorative vase on the right, in the background there is a landscape with a dark cloudy sky. This work is rightly attributed to Petr Brandl - one of the greatest masters of Czech Baroque painting. The painting was exhibited at the exhibition of Prague Baroque in 1938. The composition and rendition of the Madonna is similar to the altar painting depicting the Adoration of the Magi in the church Zjeveni Pane in Smirice which was painted by Brandl in 1727. Provided with a laboratory report by D. Pechova. Ex collection Miroslav Trlica. Petr Brandl is one of the leading Czech Baroque painters, he is known for his paintings with strong light contrasts and his characteristic brushwork emphasizing the dramatical character of his paintings.
