Together with: T.L.S. of Brigadier General GEORGE PAPPAS, sending information about the opening; an official invitation to the dedication; a document sending information to the guests; two printed maps, and three 8 x 10 in. color, vintage photos of the event showing Bradley with attendees. Very good condition.

He writes, in part: "...The Department of the Army has received many requests on behalf of Baroness von Weichs for the return of the baton...The Judge Advocate General of the Army has thoroughly considered the legality and propriety of such action...The baton in question is adorned with swastikas and is generally symbolic of the Nazi Party. It is therefore the type of emblem or insignia required to be destroyed or removed from Germany under the provisions of Allied Control Council Directive No. 30, which implemented the de-Nazification principles...the return of the baton would be incompatible with the international obligations of the United States..." Fine content T.L.S. “Brad” as Army Chief of Staff on official letterhead marked “PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL”, 2pp. 4to., Washington, July 11, 1949 to CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888-1972), American major general who commanded the 1st Infantry Division in its assault on Omaha Beach, in the drive across France, at the Hurtgen Forest and in the battle of Aachen. Bradley discusses a replacement for Huebner’s commander, Lucius Clay, whom Huebner clearly hoped to replace himself. In part: “…we expected to send one of our four-star generals over to Germany prior to Clay’s departure…the decision was made for the State Department to take over the Military Government…we knew that you were perfectly capable of carrying on. At the same time, we feel that our senior military commander in Europe must be a four-star General…this is not done because of any lack of confidence in you…We could not solve it by promoting you because we have all the four-star Generals we are permitted by law…” Very good. Huebner would retire from the Army the following year.

Bradley also states that he will try to avoid adding staff: "...until sometime after we have gotten into combat..." Folds, file holes at top, and dockets, still very good. WALTER BEDELL SMITH (1895-1961) served as Eisenhower's chief of staff at Allied Forces Headquarters during the Tunisia Campaign and the invasion of Italy, and chief of staff at SHAEF in the campaign in Western Europe from 1944-45.

Omar Bradley color photograph signed and dedicated to Gary Powers in pen. This lot also includes Bradley's golden medallion and the stamp made in commemoration of his war efforts. The full lot measures 18 x 16'' and is framed in wood. General Bradley was a highly respected officer of the United States Army who had participated in the Battle of Normandy and other famous military engagements. The photograph dedicated to Gary Powers was a high honor, coming from a man of Bradley's importance. Francis Gary Powers was a distinguished pilot for the CIA's U-2 program during the height of the Cold War. Official matte-finish 8 x 10 US Army photo of Bradley standing in the rubble at Bastogne with Eisenhower and Patton near the end of World War II, signed in black felt tip, "Omar N. Bradley." Reverse bears a typed US Army caption. In fine condition, with a few unobtrusive creases. The Siege of Bastogne took place at the end of December, 1944, during which the American forces-though surrounded by German troops, outnumbered five-to-one, and dangerously undersupplied-held their original positions in the besieged Belgian town and repulsed infantry assaults, capturing almost a hundred German soldiers before elements of Patton's Third Army finally arrived to relieve them. An unusual image of the admired US generals amidst the devastation of war.

Omar Bradley War-dated ALS signed "Brad," one page both sides, 8 x 10.5, January 17, 1944. Letter to Major General John P. Lucas, written from Headquarters in New York. In part: "I understand you are having a nice warm winter down there on the flat plains of Italy where there are nice bridges across all the streams. I also hear that the Germans have quit using mines. Such ideal conditions must make fighting a real pleasure. As you know, we are doing our fighting on paper right now. It will be nice when we can get on with the show and take a more active part. I hear rumors about your getting another command. Congratulations. Sorry we are not going to be along side each other. Maybe we will be when our attacks converge. Keep up the good work and I will meet you in Berlin." In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and a bit of mild toning. Accompanied by the original free franked mailing envelope, addressed in Bradley's hand to Lucas, franked "Free" in the upper right, with Bradley's signature appearing in the return address area "O. N. Bradley, Lieut Gen." Also accompanied by an unsigned candid photo of Lucas talking to General Mark Clark, with a notation on the reverse stating that the photo was taken at Anzio Harbor on D-Day.As Bradley was writing this letter, General John Lucas was preparing to command his Corps in Operation Shingle, an Allied landing in Anzio, Italy, intended to outflank German forces of the Winter Line and enable an attack on Rome. The initial landing took place on January 22 and achieved complete surprise with no opposition, but Lucas failed to capitalize on the element of surprise by delaying his advance to prepare for an expected counterattack. While he did so, German troops moved in, gaining a clear view of every Allied position, stopped the drainage pumps, and flooded the reclaimed marsh with salt water, forcing entrapment and threatening an epidemic. It was under these "ideal conditions [that] make fighting a real pleasure," that Lucas' Corps fought inconclusively for a month before the commander was relieved and sent home. As Lucas was leaving combat after his disappointing performance, Bradley was anxious to get involved: "As you know, we are doing our fighting on paper right now. It will be nice when we can get on with the show and take a more active part." His "fighting on paper" would soon become the very real action of the Normandy landings on D-Day, an affair for which Bradley is evidently quite eager. This fantastic letter from the General of the Army just months before his big day, is packed with enthusiastic anticipation for the coming fight.

An interesting set of four pieces concerning Bradley's officer's salary including an A.D.S. 1p. 8vo., [n.p., 1945] writing that he "Overpaid on voucher for Aug and July 1945 pay. Finance officer said it was easier to give them a check for overpayment than to recall voucher". Below, Bradley calculated the overpayment and noted that he paid "466.68 repaid by check on Moberly bank dated Pet 10 1945 signed O N Bradley". A second A.D. (unsigned), 1p. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.] appears to be further calculations based on the first note. The third piece a partly-printed and Typed D.S. "W P. Duffy" 1p. oblong 8vo., Washington, Sept. 11, 1945 is a receipt for Bradley's reimbursement to the Army of $466.68 described as a "Refund to cover overpayment of personal money allowance for the period 1 July to 31 August 1945...". With a T.L.S. of Congressman RICHARD C. WHITE, 1p. 4to. Washington, May 20, 1980 thanking Bradley for his "recent letter indicating that you wish to pursue a legislative readjustment of the compensation you are now receiving in order to bring it into line with other salaries awarded by the Department of the Army...". Four pieces in very good condition.

Fine content T.L.S. 1p. 4to., on his personal letterhead, [n.p.] Feb. 4, 1981, to President Ronald Reagan thanking him "...for granting me the privilege of actively participating in your Inaugural Ceremonies. Kitty and I were warmed throughout by your special cordiality and by the inclusion in the many intimate gatherings. I know that Kitty who takes over my letter-writing when I am not up to par recently communicated with the First Lady pointing out that you are the fourteenth President under whom I have served. In fact I entered West Point during the summer of 1911, the year in which you were born. Given the laws of probability you may be my final president and I find myself content with that, although Kitty assures me that if I die she'll kill me. Through my 70 years of service I cannot recall experiencing so strong a surge of optimism and belief that a new administration augurs so well for our country and for the world. Please know that Kitty and I are ready to serve you in any way we can. Until you find that way, we are content in the knowledge that there are sure strong hands on the reins of our nation.". Sadly for Bradley, he died only two months later on April 8, 1981. Reagan's inaugural was one of Bradley's last public appearances before his death. Very fine condition.

(unsigned), 2pp. 4to., [n.p., n.d. but probably 1945] in pencil, headed "Top Secret (underlined in red), summarizing the decision-making process over the assignment of zones of occupation in Germany at the close of the Second World War. In full "Zones in Germany decided at Sept 1944 Quebec Conference, not made as a result of recommendation of the Military. Zonal discussions began in Aug43. President & U.S. Chiefs of Staff opposed to S. West Zone. Wanted N. NE. at 2nd Quebec conference in Sept 44 [illeg.] referred question to President & Prime Minister who reached agreement of UK, N.W. - US, S.W. Tripartite agreement on Zonal boundaries reached on 12 Sept 44 & amended 14 Nov 44 US Chiefs had recommended that proposed Soviet boundary be from 50 - 150 miles to east of present boundary would have placed U.S. boundary on outskirts of Berlin. British & Soviets had proposed present boundary on recommendation of Winant, U. S. delegate on European Advisory Commission; President agreed to British - Soviet proposed boundary. Withdrawal completed July 4th from Soviet Zone, July 9th UK". This withdrawal from the Soviet Zone proved crucial at it convinced the Soviets to allow American, British and French forces into their pre-designated zones in Berlin. This would be the last vestige of cooperation as relations between the Soviets and the West deteriorated over the next several years resulting in the ultimate division of Germany which continued for over four decades. Pages are evenly toned and bear light folds, else very good condition.

Clifton (1913-1991) was Bradley's personal assistant and later military aide to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. Boldly engrossed and signed. In part: “The Army has long profited by your many accomplishments. We consider ourselves especially fortunate to have had an officer of your professional knowledge and training as Chief Medical Officer at SHAEF during the late war. I am fully aware of General Eisenhower’s reliance on your outstanding ability. Your most recent responsibility as President of the Personnel Board was carried out with the same zeal and enthusiasm that have always marked your distinguished career.” In fine condition, with some mild toning, and a couple corner creases, not affecting text or signature. Kenner was also named Chief Medical Officer for Operation Overlord, the allied landings in Normandy in 1944. RRAuction COA.
