Alice Boyd (British, 1823-1897) - Galloway waterfall

      Est: £400 - £600

Alice Boyd (British, 1823-1897) Galloway waterfall watercolour h:44 w: 34 cm Provenance: Brought from Edinburgh to Sweden, and thence in a private collection In the mid-19th Century, Alice Boyd of Penkill Castle became involved in a romantic affair with the painter, William Bell Scott. Before long many of his artist friends such as Dante Gabriel Rosetti and William Morris visited, being inspired by the surroundings and the companionship of kindred spirits. William Bell Scott spent his time at Penkill, painting, amongst other works, a mural called 'The King's Quair', which has become one of his best known works, around the walls of the spiral staircase. Alice invited many of Scott's friends from the Pre-Raphaelite movement to the castle including Dante Gabriel Rosetti, Arthur Hughes, William Holman Hunt and William Morris (who is responsible for embroidered panels within the castle). Alice Boyd was one of the most interesting women artists in the Pre-Raphaelite circle, although she has inevitably been overshadowed by the figure of William Bell Scott. They met in Newcastle in 1859, when he was Head of the Government School of Design and she was looking for a painting tutor. Although Scott was married, he and Alice fell in love, and a ménage a trois was successfully established whereby Alice spent the winter with the Scotts in London (where they moved to in 1864) and they spent the summer with her at Penkill, her miniature Ayrshire castle. Christie's held the Penkill house sale on 15 December 1992.

St Columba's Farewell to the White Horse signed with initials and dated 'EB 1865/8(?)' (lower left) oil on board 13 7/8 x 191/2 in. (35.3 x 49.5 cm.) PROVENANCE Penkill Castle, Ayrshire. with The Fine Art Society, London, from whom acquired by the present owner in 1981. EXHIBITION The Painter was a Lady, 1986-7, no. 4. Ladies of the Brush, 1994-5, no. 5. NOTES Alice Boyd was one of the most interesting women artists in the Pre-Raphaelite circle, although she has inevitably been overshadowed by the figure of William Bell Scott (lot 88). They met in Newcastle in 1859, when he was master of the Government School of Design and she was looking for someone to help her develop her artistic talent. Although Scott was married, they fell in love, and a m‚nage … trois was successfully established whereby Alice spent the winter with the Scotts in London (to which they moved in 1864) and they spent the summer with her at Penkill, her miniature Ayrshire castle. Many works by both artists were included in the Penkill house sale held by Christie's on 15 December 1992. The picture dates from the period when the Scotts were living at 33 Elgin Road, Notting Hill, their address from the time they settled in London in 1864 until they moved to Bellevue House, Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, in 1870. This ties up with the name of the artist's colourman - William Benham, 9 Devonshire Terrace, Notting Hill, W - who evidently supplied the panel and whose label survives on the back. Alice Boyd's paintings often take their subjects from Celtic legend, and this one is no exception. It shows St Columba on the island of Iona bidding farewell to an old white packhorse which, having a premonition of the Saint's death, has come, weeping bitterly, to receive his blessing. The subject was later treated by another Scottish artist, John Duncan (see John Kemplay, The Paintings of John Duncan, 1994, illustrated p. 109). The picture's background owes much to the view of the Firth of Clyde and Ailsa Craig that can be seen from the battlements of Penkill Castle.
