    • JOE BOWLER. Couple dancing.
      Dec. 14, 2023

      JOE BOWLER. Couple dancing.

      Est: $1,500 - $2,500

JOE BOWLER. Couple dancing. Story illustration for "The Yum Yum Girl," published in McCall's magazine, March 1960. Gouache on board. 508x654 mm; 20x25 3/4 inches. Signed "Bowler" in lower left image. Joe Bowler's career as a commercial illustrator began while working as an apprentice at Charles E. Cooper studios, the agency that represented top illustrators in the field including Coby Whitmore, Jon Whitcomb, and Joe DeMers. While assisting the artists with mixing paint and cleaning brushes, Bowler's talent was discovered by Whitmore, prompting him to show his work to Cosmopolitan who purchased it on sight. Bowler was soon offered a "real" job at Cooper studios where he produced works for McCall's, The Ladies' Home Journal, The Saturday Evening Post, and more. After tragically contracting polio in 1958, Bowler became paralyzed. Fortunately, therapy restored movement to his arms and hands, and he was able to return to his career. He has been honored by the New York Art Directors Club, The Artists Guild of New York, and The Society of Illustrators. Bowler was known for his striking compositions and brilliant colors. Referring to himself as a "flesh color painter," Bowler was interested in exploring "the play of warm and cool colors, [enhancing] the volume of and dimensionality of the figure." JOE BOWLER (1928-2016) NUDE, OIL ON CANVAS

      Est: $3,500 - $4,500

Joe Bowler (american, 1928-2016) Oil on Canvas Reclining Nude. In painted and gilded frame from the gallery. In frame 24 1/2"x21"x2 1/2". Weight 7 pds. Joe Bowler began his career as a professional artist at the age of 18. His mentors at Charles E. Cooper studios included Colby Whitmore, Bernard D'Andrea and Joe DeMers, and his first story illustration was published in Cosmopolitan in 1949. The great museums of New York afforded the young artist opportunities to see original paintings by the great masters of art history. Joe was particularly drawn to those who worked in the late nineteenth century. The draftsmanship, compositions, and color of John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla and Anders Zorn became his major influences, and he began to work in oil, "the painter's medium". It is noteworthy that in 1972, when Joe Bowler left the field of illustration in New York and moved to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, he effectively retired from the demands of art directors to pursue a passion for portraiture. It was a natural evolution because much of his work had been magazine cover portraits including Rose Kennedy, Pearl Buck, and Julie and David Eisenhower. From time to time, Joe would send photographs of completed portraits to his former art directors who in turn, would have writers modify scripts so that the images could be used to illustrate stories or even appear on the cover. Elected to the Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1992, Joe had been a dominate force in the glamour images of McCalls, Ladies Home Journal, Redbook, Collier's, Saturday Evening Post, Woman's Home Companion and Good Housekeeping as well as on Time covers from 1948 into the 1970s.
