Michael Bowen (1937-2009) is a well-known Beat Generation artist and provocateur from San Francisco who made paintings, prints, collages and assemblages for over forty years. Bowen hung around the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles and took credit for helping Wallace Berman haul a heavy Verifax machine that he had procured and which would later drive his most important work, back to the artistâ??s house. Bowen instigated some of the best-known public spectacles of the sixties, including the 1966 Love Pageant Rally and the 1967 Human Be-In. Bowen was also was the co-founder of the San Francisco Oracle, a renowned underground newspaper that was published in Haight Asbury from 1966-1968.
