Four 19th C. Charles Bird King Colored Lithographs

    Est: $500 - $750

John T. Bowen (English, 1801-1856) after Charles Bird King (American, 1785-1862). Four hand-colored lithographs from "History of the Indian Tribes of North America," Philadelphia: J.T. Bowen, 1850 and D. Rice and A.N. Hart, 1848. Three have "Lith.d, Col.d, & Published by J.T. Bowen, Philad.a" printed below image. "Paddy-Carr" has "Published by D. Rice and A.N. Hart, Philad.a / Lith. Printed & Col.d by J. T. Bowen" printed blow image. A fine ensemble of four hand-colored lithographs by J.T. Bowen after portraits by American artist Charles Bird King, all originally published in "History of the Indian Tribes of North America" by Thomas McKenney (American, 1785-1859) and James Hall (American, 1793-1868). "Paddy-Carr, Creek Interpreter" was published by C. Rice and A.N. Hart in 1848, while "Oche-Finceco," "Apauly-Tustennuggee," and "Pee-Che-Kir, A Chippewa Chief" were published by J.T. Bowen in 1850. Size of page (all the same): 6.75" W x 10.25" H (17.1 cm x 26 cm); with matte: 11.5" W x 15" H (29.2 cm x 38.1 cm) From 1824 to 1830, Thomas McKenney served as US Superintendent of Indian Affairs in Washington, DC, and during his tenure developed a government collection of portraits of prominent Native Americans who visited the city as delegates of their tribes. McKenney commissioned a well-known Washington portraitist, Charles Bird King, to paint the leaders of about twenty Native American tribes. Sadly, those original paintings were destroyed by a fire. Given this, lithographs rendered after those paintings, like these, are the only surviving records of those compositions. Provenance: private Appleton, Wisconsin, USA collection All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Framed Audubon Lithograph, Rocky Mountain Goat ca. 1850

    Est: $800 - $1,200

John James Audubon( American, 1785-1851). Printed and colored by John T. Bowen (American, 1801-ca. 1856). "Rocky Mountain Goat" lithograph in colors - Published in Philadelphia from 1849-1856. A framed octavo sized lithograph of Audubon's "Rocky Mountain Goat", number 26 / plate 128 of "The Vivaparous Quadrupeds of North America" which was created in collaboration with reverend and naturalist John Bachman (1790-1874) who wrote the accompanying text. Audubon and his son John Woodhouse left during the summer of 1843 for an expedition along the Missouri River to depict and document the 4-legged mammals of North America. The esteemed printmaker John T. Bowen produced the set of 150 black and white lithographs which were hand colored. This piece depicts a male and a female goat. One is standing and one is lying upon the foothills, as the Rocky Mountains grace the background. Size of sight view: 6.25" L x 9.25" W (15.9 cm x 23.5 cm) Size of frame: 20.375" L x 23.25" W (51.8 cm x 59.1 cm) John James Audubon was an American painter, ornithologist, and naturalist who created illustrated zoologies that served as both scientific documents and wonderful works of art on paper in the 19th century before photomechanical processes were the primary method of creating book illustrations. Zoological illustration is a specialized genre of art, and while Audubon sought to accurately depict animals like other illustrators, his work stands apart as an exemplar because he was also concerned with aesthetic considerations and created the finest compositions, meeting the demands of both art and science. Audubon is perhaps most famous for his depictions of birds; however, he also depicted mammals as we see in this example. Prior to Audubon's work and that of only a few others including John Gould and Josef Wolf, most ornithological and zoological illustrations were not drawn from life but rather from mounted specimens, showing a bird perching upon a branch for example. Audubon was one of the first to impart motion and instill life in his illustrations. What's more the medium of colored lithography was ideal for capturing the vivid hues of birds' plumage and mammals' fur. Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection; Private Collection of a Private Colorado Family All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. • Audubon Colored Lithograph of American Wild Cat - 1842
    Sep. 22, 2016

Audubon Colored Lithograph of American Wild Cat - 1842

    Est: $11,000 - $16,500

After John James Audubon( American, 1785-1851) by John T. Bowen (American, 1801-ca. 1856), Colored lithograph entitled, "Common American Wild Cat (Plate 1) Lynx Rufus," ca. 1842, published in "The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America," New York 1845-48. A lithograph with hand-coloring on wove paper, framed and matted, depicting a wild cat crawling through its natural environs. The feline as well as his setting come to life with vivid details. John James Audubon was an American painter, ornithologist, and naturalist who created illustrated zoologies that served as both scientific documents and wonderful works of art on paper in the 19th century before photomechanical processes were the primary method of creating book illustrations. Zoological illustration is a specialized genre of art, and while Audubon sought to accurately depict animals like other illustrators, his work stands apart as an exemplar because he was also concerned with aesthetic considerations and created the finest compositions, meeting the demands of both art and science. Audubon is perhaps most famous for his depictions of birds; however, he also depicted mammals like this example. This example depicting the Lynx Rufus or Common American Wildcat is a wonderfully dramatic yet scientifically accurate depiction of this species, and as a mammal, much rarer than Audubon's renderings of birds. A wonderful work of art for any fan of illustrated zoologies, especially for all our feline lovers! Size: image measures 26.5" L x 20.75" W (67.3 cm x 52.7 cm); 35" x 29.5" (89 x 75 cm) framed and matted. "Common American Wild Cat (Plate 1) Lynx Rufus" published in "The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America," New York 1845-48.
