      ABEL BOWEN (1790-1850)

      Est: $6,000 - $8,000

ABEL BOWEN (1790-1850) "U.S. Frigate Constitution, of 44 Guns", engraving with aquatint and handcoloring by A. Bowen after a drawing by Wm. Lynn, published in Boston by Wm. Lynn. Engraved after the Constitution arrived in Boston from the famous victory over the Guerriere in 1812. In the original black lacquered cove frame, under rippled glass, OS: 20 1/4" x 25", SS: 16 1/4" x 21". Toned, stained. Per the Old Print Shop: "This is an extremely rare and important American print from the War of 1812 and the only large-scale engraving by Abel Bowen. The ship and water are engraving and the sky is aquatint. The Naval ship "Constitution" was one of six frigates authorized to be built by Congress in 1794. The Constitution was built at the Hartt's Navy Yard in Boston and launched in October 1797. During the War of 1812, the naval ship became known as 'Old Iron Sides' because the cannon balls of other ships bounced off her thick oak sides causing little to no damage. The Constitution was in active combat service for more than 100 years. Currently, she is a floating museum and sits in the Boston Navy Yard. Still listed as an official vessel of the United States Navy she goes on maneuvers once a year to retain this accreditation. "
