        Est: $500 - $700

(1830-1863) Confederate major general regarded as one of the best in the Western Theater, referred to by one biographer as the 'Stonewall of the West.' Fought at Shiloh, Corinth, and the Siege of Vicksburg during which he contracted dysentery and died not long after the city was surrendered. Fine content A.L.S., 3pp. 8vo., St. Louis, August 20, 1860, to a friend named ‘Matt' discussing rising tensions between the North and South. In part: '...We are here in the [?] of the most tragic potential excitement; which I believe will end in the dissolution of the Union. I am far from risking it but am firmly convinced that it must come. Lincoln will inevitably be elected and I have seen enough in the South to convince me they will not submit to his inauguration. They are wild with excitement and seem determined to resist. The northern people have made big crops and are in a flourishing condition and seem to think about the South, 'Let her go'...' Two small tears at creases, else very fine.
