TRAVEL POSTER FRENCH LINE OCEAN LINERS MIDCENTURY MODERN

      Est: £90 - £180

Original vintage travel poster for the Transatlantique Liners: “C’est toujours Fête… à bord des paquebots de la Cie Gle Transatlantique” ( It's always a Party - On board the Cie Gle Transatlantique Liners). Fantastic artwork created by René Bouvard (1910-2008) showing a firework illuminating the night sky above a French Line cruise ship with bright burst of colours reflecting in the water. The Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, typically known overseas as the French Line, was a French shipping company funded in 1855 by the brothers Émile and Issac Péreire under the name Compagnie Générale Maritime. The company was entrusted by the French government to transport mails to North America. After a period of trials and errors in the late 19th century, the company gained fame in the 1910s and 1930s with its prestigious ocean liners such as SS Paris, SS Île de France, and especially SS Normandie. Fragilized by the Second World War, the company regained its fame in 1962 with the famous SS France, until it was retired from service in 1974, and before the company merged with the Compagnie des Messageries Maritimes to form the Compagnie Générale Maritime in 1977. Printed by the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. Ernest René Bouvard (Paris, May 13, 1910 - Le Perreux-sur-Marne, Val-de-Marne, December 13, 2008) was a French graphic designer, illustrator and poster designer. Very good condition, minor cracks and tears in margins, backed on linen. Country: France, year of printing: 1950s, designer: Rene Bouvard, size (cm): 97.5x62
