Dated 1510 lower left / Dürer's monogram Hardly any other Flemish master of his time executed the thorn-crowned face of Christ in close-up view and in a round format as frequently as Aelbert Bouts. These paintings are the direct model for the present small work. Aelbert was a son of the important painter Dierick Bouts the Elder and brother of Dierick Bouts the Younger. The Dürer monogram is a later addition. A recent analysis report by the Laboratory for Art Technological Research at the Technical University of Cologne is available.

    • Exceptional and Important Saint Face of Christ, attributable to Albrecht Bouts (Leuven, c. 1451/1460 - 1549), Flemish school of Medieval transition to the Renaissance
      Sep. 27, 2023

Exceptional and Important Saint Face of Christ, attributable to Albrecht Bouts (Leuven, c. 1451/1460 - 1549), Flemish school of Medieval transition to the Renaissance

      Est: €14,000 - €15,000

With important period frame in ebonized wood. Oil on panel. Table measurements: 32 x 45 cm, framed measurements: 57 x 70 cm. Lot from an important private Spanish noble collection. Albrecht Bouts (Leuven, c. 1451/1460 - 1549) was an important Flemish painter, also known as the "Master of the Assumption of the Virgin". Son of Dieric Bouts and younger brother of Dieric Bouts II, who inherited his father's workshop, it seems likely that upon the death of his father, in 1475, he completed his training outside of Louvain, with some unknown teacher who could be Hugo van der Goes, whose influence can be seen in the work of Albrecht, who always tends to accentuate the dramatic features present in his father's painting. In 1480 he is mentioned for the first time in Louvanian documentation as "pictor ymaginum", 2 and from that date he frequently worked for the city's churches, although only one documented work is known: the triptych of the Assumption of the Virgin from the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium,3 from which It has been possible to isolate his style and assign it a large group of works. The Transfiguration of the Fitzwilliam Museum stands out among them,4 but without a doubt the most popular and repeated of his compositions is the one that shows with extreme pathos the face of Christ as the Man of Sorrows, isolated or forming diptychs with the face of his mother the Virgin. as Mater Dolorosa. ALBRECHT BOUTS (seguace di)

      Est: €1,000 - €2,000

Bouts, Aelbrecht (Nachfolger) Löwen 1451/54 - 1549 35 x 24,5 cm Ecce Homo. Öl/Holz. Deutsche Privatsammlung. Vgl. Peter van den Brink (Hrsg.), Blut und Tränen. Albrechts Bouts und das Antlitz der Passion. Ausst.-Kat. Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum Aachen, März-Juni 2017. Bouts, Aelbrecht (Nachfolger) Löwen 1451/54 - 1549 35 x 24,5 cm Ecce Homo. Oil/panel. German private collection. The painting is based in reverse on the Dijon model painted by Albrecht Bouts around 1494 (Dijon, Musée des Beaux-Arts, inv. no. D1948-1-P). In relation to the prototype, the crown of thorns is simplified, Christ's cloak is wider open over the upper body and isolated drops of blood run down the neck. Two other inverted versions of the original can be found in the Leffe Abbey in Dinant and in a private collection in Luxembourg. Cf.

      Nov. 15, 2014

Albrecht Bouts, circle of, Christ as the Man of Sorrows

      Est: €30,000 - €40,000

The Saviour crowned with thorns is presented against a blue green background. His head slightly inclined to the right he wears the traditionally purple mantle of the Passion. His face is marked by his weeping eyes, melancholic gaze, and parted lips. Holding both his hands with palms facing the viewer in the lower right corner of the composition he shows the stigmata in a gesture of blessing. Drops of blood flow from the five row crown of thorns mixing with tears along his cheeks.Typical of the devotional painting this portrait-like representation of the suffering Christ was highly praised in Louvain at the turn of the 15th and 16th century. Sometimes associated with a Virgin at Prayer into a diptych, the composition of Christ alone was mass produced. The present version of fine technical quality is typologically close to the Christ Crowned with Thorns in the Bratislava Narodna Galerija (cf. V. Henderiks: Albrecht Bouts 1451/1455-1549, Brussels 2011, p. 398, no. 188).
