BOUTERWEK, FRIEDRICH AUGUST - 1806 Friedrichshütte - 1867 Paris - Shepherds Making Music in Campagna.

      Est: €9,000 - €12,000

BOUTERWEK, FRIEDRICH AUGUST 1806 Friedrichshütte - 1867 Paris Shepherds Making Music in Campagna. Oil on canvas. Relined. 82 x 101cm. Signed and dated lower left: Fr. Bouterwek 1838. Framed. Bouterwek was mainly interested in painting figures. This preference and his initially strict style of composition is borrowed from his first master, Karl Wilhelm Kolbe the younger. He was his student starting in 1822 at the KA in Berlin. After he won the prize of the KA for face painting in 1832, he continued his studies under Paul Delaroche, who let him assist amongst others at the painting of the Madeleine Church in Paris. In the mid 1830s he travelled to Italy where he created for instance the painting "Fisherman family on the island Procida". In 1841 he received the Great Gold Medallion for this painting in Paris. After further journeys through Europe he finally settled in Paris in 1838. From 1826 to 1848 his works were exhibited at Berlin art exhibitions on a regular basis. Moreover some of his works could be found in Paris art salons, in Boulogne-sur-Mer as well as in Cologne and in Lyon. Bouterwek dedicated his last two decades by preference to church painting. The outstanding painterly quality of the present work can be seen as an example for Bouterwek's oeuvre, which is considered lost with only few exceptions.
