Geneva: Barde, Manget & comp., 1787. A fine copy of a delightful work accompanied by engravings by Angélique Moitte after Bourrit's own drawings, and with a large folding map of the Swiss Alps engraved by Christian Gottlob Geissler. This is the first issue of this edition, which differs from the second, published in the same year, for many characteristics. First of all, the address of the Parisian bookseller on the title page is rue des Poitevins, n°13 instead of rue Haute-Feuille, hôtel Coëtlosquet. Furthermore, in the first volume the composition of the text becomes more airy from p. 289 and the text ends on p. 308 instead of 307. The layout of the text in the third volume is also slightly different from p. 269 and the final two pages are mistakenly numbered 189 and 290, an error which will be remedied in the second issue. 3 volumes 8vo (191 x 115mm). Half-title, engraved frontispiece, woodcut head-and-tail pieces, 13 engraved plates (some light browning and waterstaining). Fine and elegant contemporary mottled calf, titles on labels and gilt decorations on spine, double gilt fillet on covers, marbled edged and endpapers (a few small wormholes, some light wear especially to joints and extremities). First edition of this fine work by Bourrit, bound with its natural continuation exploring the Italian side of Mont Blanc. The first work is accompanied by delightful plates drawn and engraved by the author, while in the second there is a folding plate which summarizes the altitudes of the main mountains in the world. The work probably belonged to the well-known Swiss historian and entrepreneur Charles-Moïse Briquet (1839-1918), famous for his company operating in the paper industry and for his studies on paper and watermarks of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. 2 works in one volume 8vo (214 x 125mm). Woodcut head pieces and decorations, 3 engraved plates in first volume and a folding plate in the second (some light staining and foxing, occasional browning). Contemporary quarter-calf, gilt title on spine label, marbled paper covers (spine with some wear and restorations especially at extremities, minor rubbing). Provenance: C.M. Briquet (stamp on title).

    MARC THEODORE BOURRIT (1735-1815)

    Est: £500 - £700

MARC THEODORE BOURRIT (1735-1815) Description des Alpes Pennines et Rhétiennes. Geneva: J. P. Bonnant, 1781. 2 vols, 8° (200 x 125mm). Folding engraved map by C. G. Geissler after the author, 8 engraved views by Angel Moitte after the author. (Occasional mostly marginal spotting). Contemporary goat-backed marbled boards, green paper labels on spine titled in manuscript (rubbed). Provenance: manuscript license in French dated 1799 on the last leaf of vol. II -- The Alpine Club (stamp). FIRST EDITION of this work by the self-dubbed 'Historian of the Alps'. 'Artist, singer, womaniser, snob and interminable raconteur, he was an endearing coward with a genius for self-promotion ... Bourrit's one redeeming trait was his fascination with the Alps. He painted them, wrote about them and spoke about them ... The one thing he could not do with the Alps was to climb them. He tried again and again ... but was thwarted by three debilitations: he dreaded cold, he disliked rain and he suffered from vertigo. ... Instead he was happier pottering over the foothills, exploring undiscovered valleys -- which he did with some success -- and telling female tourists how things should be done. ... When in 1775 he eventually managed to climb one of the smaller hills, Le Buet ... he burst into such an extravagance of speech and song that a large boulder was named 'La Table au Chantre' in his honour' (F. Fleming, Killing Dragons, London, 2001, pp. 17-19). (2)
