SAMUEL BOURNE (1834-1912) Album with approximately 56 images, most of India and many by Bourne, as well several photographs of Malta. The album opens with several photographs of Malta, including one 3-part panorama and four 2-part panoramas. The remainder of the album features scenes from India, 23 with Bourne's credit and a few more with his inventory number, and including sweeping landscapes, landmark sites in Mumbai (Bombay), Agra, and Delhi, as well as detailed images of mosques, temple interiors, the Ganges, and more remote mountainous terrain. Albumen prints, the images measuring 9⅜x11¾ inches (23.8x29.8 cm.), and slightly smaller, and the reverse, the panoramas 8⅛x20 inches (20.6x50.8 cm.), mounted recto/verso, 26 with Bourne's credit or inventory number in the negative, and three more with another credit Laurier, many with captions in pencil on the mount. Folio, gilt-lettered leather, lightly worn. 1863-70 Bourne arrived in India in 1863 and opened a photographs studio in Simla. He left India only seven years later, in 1870, and by then had produced over 2500 views. His record of India was exhaustive, meticulous, and highly appreciated by tourists, scientists, and collectors.

Albumen prints, the images measuring 9 1/2x11 3/4 inches (24.1x29.8 cm.), and slightly smaller, and the reverse, four on mounts 18 1/4x16 1/4 inches (46.3x41.3 cm.), one mount slightly smaller, nearly all with Bourne's signature and inventory number in the negative, one with the title in the negative, and two with the printed title on mount recto. 1863-70 Waterfall and Bridge (#200) * Near Manirung Pass (#1472) * View from Kunzan (#1454) * Distant View (#1463) * Nelang Pass (Buspa Valley) (#1527) * Interior of Eastern Colonnade, Kutub, Delhi (#1374, mounted) * Waterfall (#2010) * Rocks, Snow - Nelang Pass (#1529, mounted) * Village of Sonamurc (mounted) * Merchants Houses on Duhl Canal (#814, mounted) Bourne arrived in India in 1863 and opened a photographs studio in Simla. He made three expeditions to the Himalayas, which brought him significant recognition. Images and accounts were published in the "British Journal of Photography" in 1864 and 1870. On the last and most strenuous of these trips in 1866, from which images are included in this group, Bourne traveled with the botanist and geologist G.R. Playfair, and hired 80 porters to carry live animals as well as boxes of chemicals, glass plates, and a darkroom tent. He succeeded in treking to the origin of the Ganges River, despite significant hardship and risk, taking a photograph at 18,600 feet of elevation, a record at the time. Bourne's courage, along with his pursuit of incredible aesthetic standards, earned him the reputation as one of the best photographer-explorers of the period. Bourne left India in 1870, and by then had produced over 2500 views. His record of India was exhaustive, meticulous, and highly appreciated by tourists, scientists, and collectors. About views like the ones in this lot, he wrote: "I never beheld such a splendid array of peaks and glaciers; they cropped up on either side, and stood thick around me like icebergs in a polar sea. And as I stood on the crest of the Pass and surveyed this vast region held in the icy fetters of eternal winter, I could not but feel deeply impressed with the sublimity and majesty of nature when beheld in scenes like these."

Albumen prints, the images measuring 7 1/2x12 1/2 inches (19.1x31.8 cm.), and smaller, and the reverse, the mounts 14 1/2x18 3/4 inches (36.8x47.6 cm.), two with Bourne's credit and inventory number in the negative, 5 with a title on mount recto, and about half with a title and some of these with a date, in pencil or ink, in an unknown hand, on mount verso. 1870s-80s

SAMUEL BOURNE (british, 1834-1912) VIEWS OF KASHMIR AND INDIA Ca. 1860s. 20 albumen prints mounted onto 13 boards. Twelve with Bourne's signature and inventory number in the negative; one with signature only in the negative; six with inventory number only; one without signature or inventory number. Four prints with later caption inscriptions in ink below image, and four prints numbered in pencil at top of image in a later hand. Each board lightly toned and bowed, scattered chipping to edges and corners. Size varies; largest measuring 11 1/2 x 9 1/2 in. (29.21 x 24.13cm), smallest 4 x 3 1/2 in. (10.16 x 8.89cm). Lockwood de Forest (1850-1932), was an American artist, interior designer and a key figure in the Aesthetic Movement of the latter 19th century. In 1882, after working with Louis Comfort Tiffany, he opened his own shop and studio in New York City, becoming a catalyst in reviving East Indian craftsmanship and style. He is also renowned for his intricately decorated furniture and interiors. Samuel Bourne was a British photographer known for his near decade-long (1863-1870) work shooting various scenes, peoples and landscapes in India and Kashmir, establishing the studio Bourne & Shepherd there in 1863. provenance: From the collection of American painter, interior designer, and furniture designer Lockwood de Forest and collected by him during his travels through India and Kashmir from 1879-1881; by descent in the family.

SAMUEL BOURNE (1834-1912) A pair of albums from India with a total of 100 photographs. The albums highlight Bourne's hallmark technically ambitious and diverse imagery, including urban scenes busy with pedestrians and vendors, as well as sublime rural landscapes and beautiful architectural studies, many including human figures. Albumen prints, the images various sizes, but measuring up to approximately 9 1/2x11 1/2 inches (24.1x29.2 cm.), and the reverse, mounted recto only, each with Bourne's signature and inventory number in the negative. Small oblong folios, gilt-lettered leather with metal clasps, worn and lacking the backstrips; partially disbound. 1863-70
