EUGÈNE BOURGOUIN (Reims, France, 1880-Paris, 1924). "The Expulsion of Eve from Paradise". Marble. Exhibitions: "European sculpture in the 20th century", European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM), Barcelona, 2014. Size: 52 cm. In this sculpture Eugène Bourgouin reflects the expulsion of Eve from paradise, based on the biblical account of the punishment inflicted by Jehovah on the first parents for having transgressed the commandment to abstain from the fruit of the forbidden tree. Although little is known about Eugène Bourgouin's biography, it is known that he was educated at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués in Reims, but at the age of 18, thanks to a scholarship, he moved to Paris, where he studied at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs et des Beaux-Arts. He was later awarded the Grand Prix de Rome. He was an excellent portrait painter, notably the portrait of the film director Preston Sturges. He was also the author of numerous designs for goldsmiths and invented a new material, Gallia Metal, for making jewellery, as shown at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900.
