b. 1949 - d. 2002

Santiago Bose (July 25, 1949 – December 3, 2002, Baguio City, Philippines) was a mixed-media artist from the Philippines. Bose co-founded the Baguio Arts Guild, and was also an educator, community organizer and art theorist.

Bose often used indigenous media in his work, ranging from bamboo and volcanic ash, to the cast-offs and debris (found objects, bottles, "trash"). His assemblages communicated a strong sense of folk consciousness and religiosity, and the strength of traditional cultures in a culture inundated with foreign cultural influences.

Bose worked toward raising an awareness of cultural concerns in the Philippines. After studying at the College of Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines between 1967 and 1972, Bose continued his studies in the United States, at the West 17th Print Workshop in New York.

He returned to Baguio in 1986 and began his explorations into the effects of colonialism on the Philippine national identity. In particular, Bose focused on the resilience of indigenous cultures, like that of his home region of the Cordilleras.
Baguio Arts Guild

Bose was the founding president of the Baguio Arts Guild in 1987. He became president again in 1992. The Guild is an active cultural association in the northern Cordillera region, emphasising regional tribal traditions and the importance of using indigenous materials. Bose played a formative role in establishing the Baguio International Arts Festival.

Through his work, Bose addressed difficult social and political concerns in the Philippines. His subject(s) were approached with deep criticality and gravity, although never without a sense of humor and wit, however irreverent.

Bose said, "...The artist cannot but be affected by his society. It is hard to ignore the pressing needs of the nation while making art that serves the nation's elite... We struggled to change society, which is difficult and dangerous, and we also sought to preserve communal aspects of life. I too am haunted by visions of hardship, poverty, disenfranchisement of the 'primitive' tribes, but between outbursts of violence and exploitation are also tenderness, selflessness and a sense of community. These will always remain unspoken and unrecognized unless we make art or music that will help to transform society. The artist takes a stand through the practice of creating art. The artist articulates the Filipino subconscious so that we may be able to show a true picture of ourselves and our world."
Awards and exhibits

Bose was granted the Thirteen Artists Award by the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1976. He has exhibited in major international events such as the Third Asian Art Show in Fukuoka, Japan and the Havana Biennial held in Cuba, both in 1989. In 1993, he was invited to the First Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art held at the Queensland Art Gallery in Brisbane, Australia. In 2000 Bose's work was included in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco's exhibition "At Home & Abroad, 20 Contemporary Filipino Artists." In June 2002, he was presented the "Gawad ng Maynila: Patnubay ng Sining at Makabagong Pamamaraan" (Cultural Award for New Media presented to outstanding Filipino Artist) by the City of Manila. In 2006, he was posthumously shortlisted for the National Artist award.

As a widely sought after artist for public commissions and artist residencies, Bose's practice included extensive international travel and included several prominent grants and fellowships.

Bose's work was marked by a conscious avoidance of a single recognizable style, by varied foreign and local influences, and by an experimental bent.

Bose has been included in the Asian American Arts Centre's artasiamerica digital archive.[1]

August Deities signed and dated 1976 (verso) mixed media 44" x 32" x 2" (112 cm x 81 cm x 5 cm) PROVENANCE: Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) WRITE UP: A common answer to the question: What is Contemporary Art? is oftentimes along the lines of picking a specific date or decade in which art, more or less, began to shed off its predominantly Modernist inclinations. Others might suggest that Contemporary Art is Modernism’s logical next step given advancements in technology. While some posit that Contemporary Art is merely a chronological marker, pertaining to art created during (arguably) the 80s to the present day no matter its style or subject. But such answers do not seem to satisfy. For if they did, scholars alike would no longer be using such a question as a fundamental jumping point for their practice. Though vague and obtuse, in a place where words cannot easily reach is a nagging feeling that there are works whose ethos cannot be located purely within the Modern; and to call them contemporary merely only because of happenstance does not fit the bill either. These works are unabashedly novel, but more importantly striking in the way they are able to dissect the world around them. The works of Santiago Bose belong to such a group. Though one cannot deny the talents of Bose, it is important to note that his artistic practice was not born in a vacuum. The philosopher Thomas Kuhn posits that great ideas are not merely born from bouts of genius, but are products of their time, circumstance, and culture as well. Kuhn introduced the concept of "paradigm shifts" to describe the fundamental changes in the scientific worldview that occur when a prevailing scientific paradigm is replaced by a new one. According to Kuhn, scientific progress is not a smooth, cumulative process but rather a series of revolutionary changes. Kuhn distinguished between "normal science" and periods of scientific revolution. In normal science, researchers work within an accepted paradigm, solving puzzles and anomalies that arise within that framework. Normal science is characterized by a stable set of beliefs, methods, and practices shared by a scientific community. One can argue that such an approach can also be applied to art. Among the reasons as to why the Sistine Chapel was adorned with High Renaissance instead of Abstract Expressionism was because of the paradigm of what art was and what it is allowed to be. Such can be said for Bose, who developed his practice in a not only rapidly-changing and industrial landscape, but one that is increasingly aware of its surroundings. August Deities acts as an object of remembrance. Comprising materials and objects once thought to be antithetical to art, the work presents itself as aesthetically and culturally aware of its existence. Here we see figures rising from, or perhaps bathing in some sort of river; their faces obscure but their body bare. Their background features a landscape that The work may be read as among Bose’s foray into religiously and mysticism; but in a mode that is not entirely idolatry, but one that practices reverence through a sense of awareness. The materiality of the work can be interpreted as a critique of the establishment that came before it. Thus, August Deities is an act of remembrance in the way it reflects an awareness of what came before the contemporary condition, a recognition of our present predicament, and a call to action for what is yet to come. Metamorphosis signed and dated 1988 (lower right, first panel) mixed media on paper 66" x 23 1/2" (168 cm x 60 cm) each León Gallery wishes to thank the artist's estate and Silverlens Gallery for confirming the authenticity of this lot PROVENANCE Artist's collection Hiraya Gallery, Manila Santiago Bose was a celebrated Filipino artist known for his thought-provoking works that seamlessly blended indigenous cultural elements with contemporary artistic expressions. Bose's artistic journey spanned over three decades, during which he actively explored themes of identity, colonialism, spirituality, and social issues, leaving an indelible mark on the Philippine art scene. According to Dr. Patrick Flores: “Discernible in his creative instinct is the quickness to mix materials, cite references across histories, subject his visual space to the stress and plenitude of codes, and thus render the enterprise highly mediated: dense, lively, hectic, even impish. These gestures eventually translate to palimpsest, textual inscription, collage, and later, installation. In many ways, Bose was an exemplar of the mixed-media repertoire, which may well be productively inflected as intermedia, the better to cast it as a cognate of his translocal sympathies.” Such an approach can be seen in this quadriptych titled 1988 piece titled Metamorphosis. In line with Bose’s practice, this particular set of pieces does not only seemingly evade any sort of simple description, but categorization as well. The mixed media work showcases four pieces each seemingly depicting a body of sorts in an anatomical and almost clinical way. The pieces in question act as charts, each emphasizing a specific way of viewing not only the work, but the bodies depicted. But one might ask if these are in fact bodies. While two pieces in the work feature bodies closely resembling the human form, the other two have seemingly strayed away from conventionalism. Though one may view these as separate entities, the title of the work suggests a sort of narrative continuum. Wherein one can view the work as an evolution of man, not only in a spiritual or cultural sense, but in a biological or even cybernetic one. One can argue that the idea that Bose is trying to exemplify here is one of change. A change so fundamental and all-encompassing that bodies and beings transcend beyond the understanding of the latter. Such an idea mirrors another work of artistic and literary merit. Namely C.M. Kosemen’s All Tomorrows. At its core, "All Tomorrows" is a work of speculative biology, presenting an alternative evolutionary trajectory for the planet and its inhabitants. Kosemen's meticulous attention to detail and his understanding of biological principles lend a sense of scientific plausibility to his imaginative creations. All Tomorrows" challenges conventional notions of human exceptionalism and highlights the potential for divergent evolution to lead to the creation of entirely new forms of life and intelligence. Through the portrayal of post-human societies and their encounters with extraterrestrial civilizations, Kosemen delves into questions of identity, morality, and the nature of consciousness. His exploration of these philosophical themes invites readers to contemplate the potential consequences of our own scientific and technological advancements and raises ethical dilemmas regarding the treatment of non-human entities. Though less direct than Kosemen’s work, Bose shares with the author and illustrator both an acceptance of a divergent fate as well as a well-founded and very human fear of change. The only constant variable in the universe is change. To accept the fact is to be aware that though each moment is interconnected, we must live with the reality that change is unknowable, and eventually as we gaze both into the future and into the past we will know nothing except the present moment.
