Jede der Allegorien schmückt dabei eine der Künstlerviten, die der Autor am Ende seines Werkes anführt. Ausgezeichnete Drucke mit Rand, ohne den Text verso.           In-12° (mm 140x75). Pagine [36], 572 incluse 1 antiporta allegorica con vedutina di Venezia e 6 belle tavole a piena pagina nel testo, il tutto finemente inciso in rame. Esemplare scompleto della carta con il colophon e dell'ultima bianca, leggermente rifilato, con minimi strappi, rare fioriture e una gora d'acqua marginale ai primi fascicoli. Legatura in piena pergamena coeva con titoli manoscritti al dorso e unghiature. Una bruciatura al piatto posteriore e alcune mancanze alla cuffia superiore.

Legatura coeva in cartonato alla rustica (mancanze al dorso, allentata). Prima ed unica edizione. Ogni tavola è accompagnata da brevi testi a fronte, che danno notizie a carattere nautico, geografico, economico, storico e mitologico. Legatura di poco posteriore in pergamena con titolo in oro su tassello bordeaux al dorso liscio, tagli dorati, entro custodia. Prima edizione in dialetto veneziano. Title with decorative border Engraved frontispiece of the coat-of-arms of Alessandro Farnese, folding general map of the Archipelago, folding maps of Crete and Negroponte, and 46 full-page maps in the text, wood-engraved initials and tailpieces. (Lacking the half-title and the leaf of preface, but with blank N4, short tear to frontispiece neatly repaired on verso without loss, small marginal chip to title just into border, general folding map with very small holes and old paper repairs to verso at creasefolds, a couple of tiny tears to map of Crete without loss, corner of Tinos plate torn away just touching plate mark as in other copies.) Slightly later limp pasteboard binding (a couple of short splits to spine, light soiling). FIRST EDITION. This work describes most of the Greek islands, as well as Mount Athos, the maps of which are derived from Bartolomeo dalli Sonetti's Isolario (Venice, 1485). The map of Crete is based on that in Boschini's earlier work Il regno tutto di Candia (see previous lot; cf. E. Clutton, 'Some seventeenth century images of Crete', Imago Mundi, 34, 1982). Engraved frontispiece, portrait and 25 full-page illustrations in the text, half-title, with the final errata leaf (occasional very minor discolouration and spotting) but an unpressed copy in contemporary limp vellum. Provenance : Adolf Bayersdorfer (bookplate). FIRST EDITION of a fascinating poem in Venetian dialect in twenty-eight cantos or 'winds' written by one of the most eminent art critics of his day. The frontispiece and engravings which illustrate works by contemporary artists - Van Dyke and Poussin among others - are by him. BL STC p.136. Cicognara 976 'Operetta interessantissima'.
