Jede der Allegorien schmückt dabei eine der Künstlerviten, die der Autor am Ende seines Werkes anführt. Ausgezeichnete Drucke mit Rand, ohne den Text verso. Greece.- Kingdom of Candia.- Boschini (Marco) Il Regno Tutto di Candia, title, dedication leaf, and 28 maps only (of 61), two double-page, engraved maps loose, very good impressions printing darkly, each leaf approx. 315 x 240 mm 12 1/2 x 9 1/2 in), the double-pages each approx. 315 x 440 mm (12 1/4 x 17 1/4 in), considerable worming to margins, but not affecting the maps, some maps with additiona numbering in brown in ink in upper right corners, scattered spotting, handling creases and minor surface dirt, disbound, folio, Venice, 1651 ⁂ Elaborate production "to celebrate Venetian valour in the face of the Turkish attack on Crete" [Atabey 136].

The work contains important biographical data of the most celebrated Venetian painters and divides the City into its six principal districts, listing the most noteworthy buildings and their contents, giving details of the authorship, subject and location of all works of art.

In-12° (mm 140x75). Pagine [36], 572 incluse 1 antiporta allegorica con vedutina di Venezia e 6 belle tavole a piena pagina nel testo, il tutto finemente inciso in rame. Esemplare scompleto della carta con il colophon e dell'ultima bianca, leggermente rifilato, con minimi strappi, rare fioriture e una gora d'acqua marginale ai primi fascicoli. Legatura in piena pergamena coeva con titoli manoscritti al dorso e unghiature. Una bruciatura al piatto posteriore e alcune mancanze alla cuffia superiore.

Frontespizio entro cornice xilografata, stemma del dedicatario, principe Alessandro Farnese a piena pagina, 3 carte geografiche a doppia pagina o ripiegate, 46 tavole incise a piena pagina (qualche leggero alone, piccola macchia a 2 tavole.) Legatura coeva in cartonato alla rustica (mancanze al dorso, allentata). Prima ed unica edizione. Ogni tavola è accompagnata da brevi testi a fronte, che danno notizie a carattere nautico, geografico, economico, storico e mitologico. Antiporta allegorica incisa, 25 tavole incise in rame a piena pagina nel testo (manca il ritratto dell’autore, foro di tarlo al margine bianco di alcune carte, piccoli difetti.) Legatura di poco posteriore in pergamena con titolo in oro su tassello bordeaux al dorso liscio, tagli dorati, entro custodia. Prima edizione in dialetto veneziano. Notevole come l’autore comprende le correnti nuove della pittura veneta e si dichiara ammiratore di Velazquez e di Rubens. Cicognara 976. 300

Title with decorative border Engraved frontispiece of the coat-of-arms of Alessandro Farnese, folding general map of the Archipelago, folding maps of Crete and Negroponte, and 46 full-page maps in the text, wood-engraved initials and tailpieces. (Lacking the half-title and the leaf of preface, but with blank N4, short tear to frontispiece neatly repaired on verso without loss, small marginal chip to title just into border, general folding map with very small holes and old paper repairs to verso at creasefolds, a couple of tiny tears to map of Crete without loss, corner of Tinos plate torn away just touching plate mark as in other copies.) Slightly later limp pasteboard binding (a couple of short splits to spine, light soiling). FIRST EDITION. This work describes most of the Greek islands, as well as Mount Athos, the maps of which are derived from Bartolomeo dalli Sonetti's Isolario (Venice, 1485). The map of Crete is based on that in Boschini's earlier work Il regno tutto di Candia (see previous lot; cf. E. Clutton, 'Some seventeenth century images of Crete', Imago Mundi, 34, 1982). (Lacking engraved title, plates 24, 25, 26 and 50 and letterpress dedication, tiny marginal tears and stains affecting the mounts.) 18th-century marbled-paper covered boards (rebacked with recent leather spine, rubbed). Provenance : Adolf Bayersdorfer (bookplate). FIRST EDITION of a fascinating poem in Venetian dialect in twenty-eight cantos or 'winds' written by one of the most eminent art critics of his day.
