        Ernst Bosch, Little Michelangelo

        Est: €10,000 - €14,000

Signed lower right: E. Bosch Alongside Hubert Salentin, Ernst Bosch is one of the most popular representatives of the narrative painting of the Düsseldorf School. After his first attempts at painting as a pupil in Krefeld, Bosch studied at the Düsseldorf Academy from 1851 to 1856 under Ferdinand Sohn, Theodor Hildebrandt and Wilhelm von Schadow. After graduating, he settled in Düsseldorf as a freelance painter and took up various positions in the city's artistic circles, such as the Verein freischaffender Künstler, the Kunstverein and the Künstlerverein Malkasten. It is possible that the title of the present painting goes back to Bosch himself. A similar painting is known as "Der angehende Michelangelo" (formerly Galerie Paffrath, Düsseldorf).

Ernst Bosch, Colonists Defending a Log Cabin from Native Americans

        Est: €30,000 - €35,000

Ref19C121121 Signed lower right: E.Bosch Df "This painting is an early work by the Düsseldorf genre painter Ernst Bosch, painted in 1854 whilst he was still a pupil at the Düsseldorf Academy (1851-1856). During this time, Bosch's works were characterised by a sense of drama, which was supplanted during his career by cosier, more humorous subjects. The present work is typical of the realist tendencies of the Düsseldorf school of painters in around 1850/60. Bosch was inspired to paint this scene by James Cooper's “The Leatherstocking Tales”, which he had read as a youth. The work depicts a settler family in America defending their home from attack by a group of Native Americans. The painting was exhibited in the art dealership of Eduard Schulte in Düsseldorf in 1855. Under its full title “Defence of a log cabin against Indians by Colonists”, it travelled throughout various German art associations in Hanover, Halberstadt, Halle and Kassel during the year. It was acquired for the purpose of auction by the heads of the associations, and thus transferred into private ownership. A copy of this composition by the American artist Eugene Benson can be found in the Terra Foundation in Chicago."

Ernst Bosch, Smuggler in a Boat

        Est: €10,000 - €12,000

Signed and dated lower right: E. Bosch Df 55The genre paintings of the 19th century generally presented an idealised depiction of borgeoise everyday and family life, in which darker themes such as robbers, smugglers and poachers rarely featured. Ernst Bosch was also primarily more at home in this idyllic world, as S. Weiß writes in his "Düsseldorfer Malerlexikon": "His work is characteristic of the idealised narrative genre painting of the Düsseldorf school in the 2nd half of the 19th century, taking his motifs from borgeoise and rural life, classical literature or the fairytales of the Brothers Grimm [...]". However, the motif of the present work, which is an early example of this important Düsseldorf genre painter's oeuvre, is drawn from the shadowy world of criminals and outlaws and this mood is expressed in the murky palette of this unusual work.
