    • Gonzalo Borondo (Valladolid 1989) Monumenta / Memoria
      Jul. 11, 2023

Gonzalo Borondo (Valladolid 1989) Monumenta / Memoria

      Est: €12,000 - €14,000

Gonzalo Borondo (Valladolid 1989) Monumenta / Memoria Bitumen, acrylic, and oil on aluminum plate 200x100 cm. What is a monument? The term “monument” comes from the Latin monere and indicates a “sign that was placed and that remains in the memory of a person or of an event”. A monument represents the architectural exposition of a message, of an ideology, or of a thought. Its physical matter is infused with a meaning related to a certain time or place. A monument is erected to celebrate a moment and to last forever, which is an intrinsic contradiction in terms. This contradiction also extends to the urban fabric to which the monument belongs. As Aldo Rossi writes, each city finds its image, its essence, and its memory through “the contrast between what is specific and what is universal and between the individual and the collectivity”, and therefore through the relationship between what is eternal and what may change, between the “urban facts” that structure it. Gonzalo Borondo questions people’s need to perpetuate themselves and their vision of things by imposing their presence on their surroundings. This translates into their compulsion to leave an indelible mark. But the context and the society they belong to are instead characterized by eternal change, which cyclically encounters the urge to oppose what remains unalterable. Like the roots of a tree, a monument reminds us every day of our history and keeps us immobile, anchored to the land we were born in, in a time that is not ours and in a static condition that does not belong to us. The destruction of a monument, be it physical or ideological, thus becomes the medium and the symbol for a revolution that establishes the breaking point necessary for evolution. “Monumenta” springs from this inexhaustible relationship of dependence and conflict: a series of paintings on aluminum plates through which Borondo speaks to us of rupture and reconciliation, of inertia and change, of all eternal antinomies.

    • Gonzalo Borondo - Edoardo Tresoldi (Valladolid 1989, Milano 1987) Fundamenta II / 8
      Jul. 11, 2023

Gonzalo Borondo - Edoardo Tresoldi (Valladolid 1989, Milano 1987) Fundamenta II / 8

      Est: €1,000 - €1,500

Gonzalo Borondo - Edoardo Tresoldi (Valladolid 1989, Milano 1987) Fundamenta II / 8 Screenprint 2 layers and screenprint monotype on Magnani Revere White paper 330 g. 142,2x106,7 cm. EDITION OF 30 - Each one is a unique edition Borondo begins to work on his production elaborating both graphically and conceptually the considerations about the column as an element of connection between man and nature and, as if it were a sign of that connection he is looking for, he runs into a work made by Edoardo Tresoldi, in a collaboration with 56Fili, in the Varsi Art laboratory. The column screen-printed by Tresoldi together with 56Fili, which transport on paper the compositions created for the installation “Opera” on the seafront of Reggio Calabria, tell of an ethereal, light element that soars upwards, aiming at the sphere of the sacred in which it tends to disappear. That element that feeds the entire poetic of Tresoldi, which tells us about the absent matter, emptying the architecture from its physical mass and transforming it into pure language, able to merge with the elements of the landscape and seek contact between man-made space and natural space. Borondo inserts himself into this imagery with a pictorial and instinctive gesture, depicting an equal and opposite drive, i.e. the site that holds the column anchored to the ground, which keeps it tied to the organic, material, and mutable sphere that generates life.

    • Gonzalo Borondo (Valladolid 1989) Insurrecta XIV (Perro Esfinge)
      Jul. 11, 2023

Gonzalo Borondo (Valladolid 1989) Insurrecta XIV (Perro Esfinge)

      Est: €4,500 - €5,500

Gonzalo Borondo (Valladolid 1989) Insurrecta XIV (Perro Esfinge) Monotype on wallpaper 68x149 cm. The present work is from the “Insurrecta” project, presented in Segovia to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the “Revuelta de los comuneros”. To describe his concept of rebellion, Borondo elects monotype as his medium, a hybrid between painting and printing, imagining to distort its “original” substance, and to reproduce the artworks in scale on disused advertising billboards, with the support of the Municipality of Segovia. This choice is inspired by Goya’s series “Los caprichos” and “Los desastres de la guerra”. Borondo is interested in Goya’s intent to bring these topics closer to the public, and thus selects engraving as his narrative medium. With the pandemic, the contents of the project are modified by new ideas that are shaped on paper and in the Segovian landscape.Initially Borondo’s prints exalt revolt as an essential dimension of man, an aggressive motion necessary for the transformation of society and the evolution of the individual. Inverted crowns, scenes of struggle, fragments of fervor and destruction. The monotypes then reflect the isolation imposed by the lockdown, during which Borondo is confined to his studio without being able to constantly bond with his sites. The memory of the past connects with the new condition and his works now include balconies and windows alive with life, a distant crowd, people together but desolate. As a consequence of this confinement, the cities empty, animals and plants take back urban spaces, fill the void and invade it. This phenomenon attracts the artist who has always been interested in the relationship between man and his environment: this metaphor becomes the basic theme for “Insurrecta. The rebels are animals that struggle to free themselves from captivity and remission, to regain possession of their instincts and of nature. Borondo chooses the bull, the horse and the dog as symbolic animals for this revolt, animals always close to man but at the same time with an impulsive temperament that can suddenly lead to rebellion.
