NOTES Born in the Vologda region, Borisov worked in the icon painting studios of the Solovetskii Monastery from 1884 to 1886 and then at the drawing school of the Society for the encouragement of the Arts at St. Petersburg from 1888 to 1897. He later organized expeditions to the Far North including Novaia Zemlia.
