        Feb. 25, 2016

Alfonso Borghi (b. 1944), 'Cartoni per il Fregio Stoclet', 2007

        Est: €1,680 - €2,100

Mixed media on canvas Italy, 2007 Alfonso Borghi (born 1944) - Italian artist Signed lower left (ligated) ‘ABorghi’ Enclosed is the catalog of the exhibition ‘Auf der Suche nach dem Glück’, Kro Art Gallery, Vienna Dimensions: 50 x 40 cm Very good condition Provenance: Private collection, Austria This work shows an abstract composition of a frieze that Gustav Klimt has created for the dining room of the Palais Stoclet in Brussels This work by the Italian artist Alfonso Borghi is title ‘Cartoni per il Fregio Stoclet‘ (Cartoon for the Stoclet Frieze). The pastose surface is partially adorned with gold leaf. This tactile texture creates an interesting depth. The blue background is reminiscent of the monochrome sponge reliefs of Yves Klein. The subject matter is an interpretation of the mosaic frieze by Gustav Klimt from the Stoclet Palace in Brussels. In this homage Borghi not only deals with Klimt’s oeuvre but also tries to make sense of the circumstance during that bygone era. Enclosed is a catalogue of the exhibition called ‘Auf der Suche nach dem Glück’ held at the Kro Art Gallery in Vienna in 2007. The present work is pictured on page 38. The painting by Alfonso Borghi is in good condition with only light signs of wear. It is signed lower left ‘ABorghi’ (ligated). Verso the canvas is inscribed ‘Cartoni per il Fregio Stoclet (Detail) / Olio et. mista su tela / 50 x 40 cm / 2007 / ABorghi’. The works dimensions are 50 x 40 cm. The catalogue is in good condition. Alfonso Borghi (b. 1944) Alfonso Borghi was born in Northern Italy in 1944. At the age of 18 he had his first exhibition. He found his early inspiration in the paintings of the Quattrocento. During a short stay in Paris he studied the cubist movement, especially the works by Picasso. Back in Italy he met George Pielmann, a pupil of Oscar Kokoschka, and was introduced to expressionism. Borghi rose to fame quickly in Italy. In the 1990s he started exhibiting his works abroad, in Paris, Tokyo and New York. At this time Borghi fundamentally changed his painting style and turned away from figurative representation. Since then his informal-expressionist works are characterized by bold colors which exhibit a unique texture due a very gestural execution. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
