        C. BONAPARTE (*1802), Landscape with Shepherd and Woman, around 1830, Lithography

        Est: €450 - €600

Charlotte Bonaparte (1802 Paris - 1839 Sarzana): Landscape with Shepherd and Woman by the River, c. 1830, Lithography Technique: Lithography on , rolled-on on Paper Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "Napoleon inv: Robert figur: Charlotte del:" und "Lit: Salucci No 191". Date: c. 1830 Description: Charlotte Bonaparte, youngest daughter of the King of Spain, Joseph Bonaparte, was an exiled artist who began her training in 1820 with David in Brussels, who was also in exile, and continued it in various places as her family fled through Europe and to the USA. From letters to her father living in Philadelphia, it is clear as early as the early 1820s that she understood drawing as an existential need. After marrying her artistically and politically ambitious cousin Napoléon Louis Bonaparte in 1826, she lived mainly in Florence, where in 1829 they worked together with the David student Léopold Robert. In 1830, Napoléon Louis Bonaparte commissioned Robert to publish a selection of the prince's travel sketches showing Italian landscapes in a series of lithographs. However, the predominantly wildly romantic landscapes still needed to be enlivened by figures, which Robert added; the images actually printed were drawn on the stone by Charlotte Bonaparte. Our print also derives from this constellation, which admittedly shows a mountain and river landscape sufficiently conquered by bridge and castle. The three idyllic staffage figures are peacefully united without narrative context, but the mighty white bull alluding to the myth of Europe lends the dreamy togetherness the impression of a hidden meaning. Keywords: Landscape, architecture, rocks, river, Europe, bull, mythology, allegory, figures, pastoral idyll, pastoral romanticism, 19th century, Biedermeier, Landscape, France,

Prince Lucien was Napoleon's second and most able brother. In 1810 he was captured off the coast Sardinia by two English frigates and exiled to England for three years. In 1824 Princess Christine married Lord Dudley Coutts Stuart (1803-1854). Little is known of their life together apart from the birth of a son in 1826, but the present albums which date from 1827 to 1830 provide a fascinating insight into their travels in Italy and the south coast of England.
