Property from the Estate of Eileen Mackevich, Chicago, Illinois Provenance: Estate of Frederic Jacobs Litchfield County Auctions, Litchfield, Connecticut, Fine Art, Antiques, & Modern, 22 April 2017, Lot 358 Note: Eileen Mackevich, MBE (1939-2022) was an American historian, broadcast journalist and civic leader. She was born in Philadelphia and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania, later followed by a master's degree in British history from Northeastern Illinois University. She co-founded the Chicago Humanities Festival in 1990 and served as its president from 1989 to 2005. The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (IHPA) and Governor Pat Quinn appointed Mackevich as the Executive Director of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois, a position she held from 2010 to 2015. Prior to her tenure at the Lincoln Presidential Library, she served as the executive director of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission in Washington, D.C. from 2006 to 2009. Mackevich worked as a broadcast journalist and talk show host on WBEZ, Chicago Public Radio, and was named by the Chicago Sun-Times as one of the "100 Most Powerful Women in Chicago" in 2004. This is an original oil painting on board by George Henry Bogert (American, 1864-1944). The framed painting features a seashore scene (appears to be Montauk) with two figures in the distance. Signed lower left. There is an old partial label on the reverse: For 61st Annual Examination, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts 1891. Bogert studied at the National Academy of Design in New York before traveling to Paris in 1884 to work with the painters Aimé Morot and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. He returned to New York four years later to study under American painter Thomas Eakins. Bogert visited Europe many times during his life and was as well known for his dreamy images of Italy, England, and France as he was for his American scenes. Frame: 15 1/8 x 11 7/8". Sight: 10 x 6 3/4".

George Henry Bogert (attributed), American, New York (1864 - 1944), a double sided work, side one depicting a moody city scene (probably New York City) with lit lanterns, the other side depicting a tonalist landscape, apparently unsigned, identified on a period plaque on the Barbizon style frame, oil on board, measures 9 x 12 inches unframed, 15 x 18 inches framed. CONDITION: moody city scene is good, tonalist scene has extensive, heavy crackelure. Bogert was expecially well-known for his landscapes, seascapes of Venice and urban subjects and is especially aligned with the style of Tonalism and the Barbizon School of painting.

Monumental George Henry Bogert (New York / France, 1864-1944) Oil/Canvas. Sight Size: 35.5 x 55.5 in. Overall Size: 49.5 x 68 in. Born in New York City, George Henry Bogert (often confused with George Hirst Bogert 1864-1923) became known for landscapes, seascapes of Venice and urban subjects and is especially aligned with the style of Tonalism* and the Barbizon School* of painting. In his signature work, he used "cool blue tones to achieve blurred form and soft half-light effects, further accentuated by the application of dense impasto." (Zellman 385). Much of this work seemed related to the popular turn-of-the-century soft focus photography. In the early 1880s, he studied at the National Academy of Design* and then went to Paris where his teachers were Puvis de Chavannes, Raphael Collin and Aime Morot. From 1884 to 1888, he spent four years in Europe, primarily in Paris with teachers including Puvis de Chavannes and Aime Morot. Returning to the United States, he was in New York as a student of Thomas Eakins. Bogert received numerous awards including the First Hallgarten Prize by the National Academy of Design in 1899 to which he was elected to membership that year.
