        (Anversa, 1620 - 1678) Madonna con il Bambino e San Giovannino Olio su tela, cm 81,5X65,5 Theodor Boeyermans fu principalmente un pittore di scene storiche, mitologiche e religiose. Ricevette anche importanti commissioni dipingendo pale d'altare per le chiese di Anversa, Malines e di Kempen. Il suo stile è chiaramente influenzato dai modelli di Pietro Paolo Rubens e Anton Van Dyck, tuttavia, come è evidente nella presente composizione, l'artista impiega una tavolozza più tenue, che pare guardare alle opere del maestro realizzate intorno agli anni Trenta. La composizione qui presentata mostra una delicata tonalità cromatica che si accentua con misura nelle vesti, e di particolare bellezza sono i passaggi a velatura dei capelli e degli incarnati, avvalorati da una buona conservazione. Il bimbo evidenzia altresì una stesura sciolta, libera e la sua figura non rivela un disegno di contorno, suggerendo un'esecuzione autonoma della composizione, ossia non delineata con un cartone o un modello.

        Lower centre on the stone: Boeyermans f. 1674 Works by the Antwerp painter Theodore Boeyermans appear very rarely on the art market. One reason for this is the fact that his total oeuvre was apparently rather small, coupled with the fact that his unsigned works are frequently attributed to other Flemish artists. Another reason is that Boeyermans often worked for the church and thus his paintings are often still "in situ". For example, his monumental "Assumption of the Virgin" in St. Jacob's Church in Antwerp. A number of his works are also housed in museums. It was thus all the more interesting when this previously undiscovered large format work was found in an Italian collection. It was probably also formerly an altarpiece. Boeyerman's religious works follow the counter-reformational style that Rubens introduced north of the Alps following his return from Italy. More than Rubens, however, Boeyermans was inspired by Anthony van Dyck, who was twenty years his junior.

The subject of The Continence of Scipio was painted by Theodore Boyermans in a canvas, 188 x 265 cm., which is signed and dated 1673, at Schloss Rheinsberg, Rheinsberg (cat.nr GK 17586). The subject shows the example of mercy recounted by Livy whereby the Roman general, Scipio Africanus, returns a young ransomed female figure to her fiancé, Allucius.
