Henry Boese New York, 1824-1863 (or 1897) Vast Rural Landscape with Foreground Farmer, a Farm House and Distant Mountains oil on canvas laid down on masonite Although not much is known about the life of Henry Boese, we do know for certain that he mastered the art of landscape painting in his native upstate New York. And we know that he very much enjoyed painting what he saw around him: hills and vales, farm houses, farmers, livestock and various local country people--and in his distinctly 19th c. American fashion. He has been labeled as a painter from the Hudson River School, and he certainly enjoyed painting vast scenes from the Hudson River Valley; he was also known to have ventured out to paint landscapes and farm scenes in nearby Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. This lovely painting created from an idealized elevated position (or possibly from a hill nearby) features a farmer holding a rake (on the left, foreground), an American farmhouse, a fenced-in area for some cows, trees from a forest that represent the vast American wilderness, and a lot of attention given to atmospheric details (haze, fog, clouds, a light blue sky) and the use of atmospheric perspective to demonstrate the depth of the local land. signed lower left, in a period giltwood frame.
