Shows the Württemberg statesman Oberhofmeister at the 'Collegium illustre' in Tübingen, Obervogt of Waiblingen, envoy of Duke Friedrich I in London in 1595. He came from an old Tübingen patrician family that can be traced back to the 13th century. The "Oriental Reyß" with its 350 pages is a work that is both lavishly designed and rich in content, in which he deals above all with the character and customs of the peoples he encountered on his five Mediterranean journeys. The highlight of his service to the dukes of Württemberg, which began in 1584, was his mission to Queen Elizabeth of England, from whom Duke Frederick I unsuccessfully requested the Order of the Garter. Johann Alexander Böner (1647 Nuremberg - 1720 ibid.): Portrait of Hans Jacob Breuning von und zu Buchenbach (*about 1552 Speyer or Innsbruck - 1617 Tübingen), 1666, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on Laid paper Date: 1666 Description: Half-length portrait to the left with chain of grace in cross-hatched rectangle. Below the image with 4-line Latin legend "HANS IACOB BREUNING, VON UND ZU BUOCHENBACH AETATIS LVIII. ANNO MDCX: DEUS COEPT[a] SECUNDET [God favour what has been begun]." lower left, almost erased: Monogram IAB (=Johann Alexander Böner). Shows the Württemberg statesman Oberhofmeister at the 'Collegium illustre' in Tübingen, Obervogt of Waiblingen, 1595 envoy of Duke Friedrich I in London. He came from an old patrician family in Tübingen that can be traced back to the 13th century. His lasting achievement is the description, published in Strasbourg in 1612, of his Oriental journey to Egypt, Palestine and Syria as well as to the Ottoman Empire, which he undertook in 1579 during extended cavalier journeys in France, England, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Austria. The "Orientalische Reyß", with its approximately 350 pages, is a work that is as elaborately designed as it is rich in content, in which he deals above all with the character and customs of the peoples he encountered on his five Mediterranean journeys. The high point of his service to the Dukes of Württemberg, which began in 1584, was his mission to Queen Elizabeth of England, from whom Duke Frederick I unsuccessfully requested the Order of the Garter.
