        The Fruit Picker

        Est: €3,000 - €4,000

The fruit collector was a theme that occupied the Berlin sculptor Reinhold Boeltzig (1863 - 1941) for a number of years and which he realised in a wealth of materials. In white marble, she was presented at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition in 1908. After that, bronze sculptures were created with brown patina as well as chryselephantine, cast by Gladenbeck. For the version in wood presented here, the sculptor glued together solid pieces of walnut before carving out the figure. Finally, the wood was given a polychrome finish which, together with the fine martellation, creates a metallic effect. It is possible that Boeltzig used the sculpture as a preliminary study for a bronze cast.

        Dec. 08, 2014

Meissen Art Nouveau Girl with Hoop, Reinhold Boeltzig, 1909

        Est: €1,600 - €2,000

Porcelain with white glaze, polychrome and golden paint Germany, 1909 Hoop player with rod, model number 235 (73301) Meissen porcelain manufactory, founded in 1710 Design by Reinhold Boeltzig (1863-1928) - German modeler Signed with 'REINHOLD / BOELTZIG' on the plinth Underglaze blue crossed swords mark, incised mark 'A. 235.', impressed number '58' and on-glaze painter's number '41.' Young woman dressed in sandals and a light, bright-green robe, bare-chested, purple ribbons on her dress and in her hair and golden etched belt buckle; holding a gold ring and a rod in her hands Total height, including the base: 41 cm Very good condition, 1st choice Finely elaborated Art Nouveau design by Reinhold Boeltzig in a perfect Meissen accomplishment The Art Nouveau hoop player, produced by the Meissen porcelain manufactory, was designed in 1909 by Reinhold Boeltzig (1863-1928). The beautiful figure enchants with its beautiful subtle colors, the finely modeled face and the dynamic body expression. The flowing folds of the long robe are particularly impressive. Furthermore, the little decorative details on the clothing and on the shoes are of particular note. The figure is signed with 'REINHOLD / BOELTZIG' on the plinth. The underside bears the underglaze blue crossed swords mark, the incised number 'A. 235.', the impressed number '58' and the painter's number '41'. The piece is of first choice and in very good condition, showing minor wear. The overall height, including the base, is 41 cm. Meissen Porcelain was known in Europe since the 13th Century, but always had to be imported from China and was thus mostly of lower quality - the Chinese seldom gave their best ware to foreigners - and extremely expensive. Europeans tried to copy the Chinese porcelain for centuries but only in 1708 managed to create real porcelain - in Meissen. The manufacturer's brand, the crossed swords in blue, has been in use since 1722 and is still a guarantee for the high quality of the porcelain. Meissen celebrated its 300 years of existence in 2008. Quality has always been the number one criteria for Meissen and they go as far as to have their own mine to win the needed kaolin, also known as china clay, for the production. It takes several years to reach the degree of a "master painter" in Meissen but judging by the quality of the painting, it is definitely worth it.
