BIOGRAPHY: Lucien Blumer is an Alsatian impressionist painter, watercolorist, illustrator, photographer and collector.He is cited by Francois Lotz, in his book Les Peintres alsaciens as being from an artistic point of view "the most Alsatian of painters", his painting effectively reflects with great charm and understanding the scenes of the rural art of living at the beginning of the 20th century .Born into a Francophile family, Lucien Blumer followed the traditional training of Alsatian artists of the time, in German, from Karlsruhe to Paris without forgetting his mother tongue. Since the Treaty of Frankfurt the May 10, 1871 and the annexation of Alsace to the Reich, Strasbourg became the capital of the Reichsland, "region of the Empire". Having studied in Germany and been educated in the Germanic manner, he spoke German, but did not feel German. Like many Alsatian artists of this period, he was immersed in French culture. He had a perfect command of spoken and written French, as several articles in the magazine L'Alsace franсaise attest in 1929. 4 In particular, he created the Kunschthafe group in 1899 with his friends from the Cercle de Saint-Leonard, Stoskopf, Spindler for the preservation of Alsatian culture in the face of excessive Germanization. This was the time when artists frequented the Stammtisch, places of exchange and conviviality. Over the years, the Kunschthafe group was at the origin of discussions around the change of name of the magazine Images alsaciennes to Revue alsacienne illustree (1898), the creation of the Alsatian Museum, the Salon des arts de la Revue alsacienne illustree at Bader-Nottin, the Maison d'art alsacienne and the Alsatian theatre 4.At the age of 26, in 1897, he presented his first exhibition at the Society of Friends of the Arts.He rubbed shoulders with other famous artists from Alsace such as Charles Spindler with whom he contributed to the creation of the Alsatian Museum and was a student of Lothar von Seebach.His main residence was a building at 11, quai des Bateliers in Strasbourg, a stone's throw from the Alsatian Museum.Lucien Blumer succeeded Gustave Stoskopf as president of AIDA (Association of Independent Artists of Alsace) in 1919.His second home was in Gertwiller; he had a tower built there from the top of which he had a beautiful panorama, this workshop allowed him to have a view of the whole village, he found inspiration there and received his guests there. At the time when his mother could no longer walk, he carried her on his back to take her up to the tower from where she could thus follow the hustle and bustle of the village. Lucien Blumer took many photographs of Gertwiller and the towns and villages of Alsace 5 .
