        MAP, England, Blome

        Est: $140 - $170

Southeast England. Richard Blome, A Mapp of Kent with Its Laths and Hundreds, from Britannia, 1673 (circa). Hand Color. This lovely map depicts the county of Kent in southeast England. The map divides the county into hundreds and names towns, villages, and cities. London is depicted as a cluster of buildings on the Thames at top left. The decorative title cartouche features birds, leaves and fruit, and there is a coat-of-arms and dedication encased in an elaborate cartouche at bottom right. Richard Blome is one of the most interesting figures in cartographic history. He is most renowned for what his contemporaries considered the plagiarism of the maps in the Britannia from Camden and Speed. In actuality Blome did not claim that the maps were original works, and the atlas filled an important gap in the market. In the preface he wrote, "I do not own myself the Author, but the Undertaker of this work". He was one of the most active publishers of illustrated books in post-Restoration London and his career provides in insight into the nature and activities of the London map and print trade of the period. LITERATURE: Shirley (BL Atlases) T.BLOM-2a.

        MAP, England, Blome

        Est: $220 - $250

Southern England. Richard Blome, A Generall Mapp of the County of Oxford, with Its Hundreds, from Britannia, 1673 (circa). Hand Color. This striking map of Oxfordshire was issued in Blome's Britannia: Or, A Geographical Description of the Kingdoms of England, Scotland, and Ireland. Shirley describes the maps in this work as "based on those by John Speed but reduced in size." It divides the county into hundreds and names several towns and cities. There is nice topographical detail of rivers, hills, parks, woodlands, and more. The dedicatory cartouche at bottom honors Henry Norris, 1st Baron Norreys of Rycote and includes an elaborate coat of arms. The map is further adorned with a strapwork title cartouche and a scale of miles. Richard Blome was one of the most interesting, and most active, publishers of illustrated books in post-Restoration London. He is most renowned for what his contemporaries considered the plagiarism of the maps in the Britannia from Camden and Speed. BLOME, Richard (1635-1705). A Mapp or the Generall Carte of the World Designed in Two Plaine Hemispheres by Monsieur Sanson... Engraved map. London, c. 1660. 16" x 21 1/4" sheet. Richard Blome (1635-1705) was a prolific London-based 17th-century map and book publisher. This world map is from his 1682 atlas Cosmography and Geography which translated for the first time to English the continental delineations of noted French cartographer Nicolas Sanson, from his groundbreaking Cartes Generales de toutes les Parties du Monde (Paris, 1658). Critics have praised Blome’s entrepreneurial efforts in his field, being the first cartographer to successfully finance his work through selling subscriptions. As incentive, he offered to engrave the subscriber’s coat of arms on their map of choice. Several of his maps bear the symbols and arms of several dukes, earls and other men of distinction from his time. Blome’s maps are festooned with bright floral arrangements, generous touches of festive colors and embellished with heraldic characters and symbols. These aesthetic qualities appeal highly to collectors looking to acquire a gorgeous period piece.
