Sion Longley Wenban (1848 Cincinnati (Ohio) - 1897 München) . 19th century Inscription: Verso inscribed by another person: "Kat. Nr. 368". Date: Description: When Sion Longley Wenban died in Schwabing on 20 April1897, hardly anyone took any notice of his death. He had lived unnoticed in Munich since 1878 and had quietly created a body of work that was far ahead of its time. It was only his exhibition of his estate that made him suddenly famous. It was only now that the American, who was born in Ohio to English parents and had matured into an artist in his adopted home of Munich, was appreciated. As a painter and etcher in equal measure, Wenban was of great importance for the beginning of modernism. When a monograph in 1913 brought his etchings to the attention of those interested in art, people were astonished at his painterly approach. The gentle, unspectacular landscapes around Munich, the old alleys of the Bavarian capital were his motifs. But how he solved such ordinary problems was unusual. The incidence of light, the gradations of colour values, the tentative dissolution of objects anticipated what was only to gain general recognition after Wenban's death. Provenance: Keywords: River landscape, hill, village, 19th century, Modern, Landscape, Germany,
