Bloch, a Swiss-American artist, met Kahlo while working on a mural at the New Workers School, where Kahlo's husband, Diego Rivera, was also involved. Their collaboration deepened into a close friendship, with Bloch capturing various aspects of Kahlo's life through her photography. Bloch's photographs offer intimate glimpses into Kahlo's world, reflecting her strength, resilience, and unique personality. Beyond their professional connection, Bloch and Kahlo formed a lasting friendship that transcended their artistic collaboration.

        LUCIENNE BLOCH (1909-1999) A selection of 4 photographs depicting life during the New Deal, including one apparently related to a labor dispute and another to an artist demonstration. Silver prints, the images measuring from 114.3x69.9 to 177.8x120.7 mm; 4 1/2x2 3/4 to 7x4 3/4 inches; and the reverse, one sheet slightly larger, three with a Photo by Lucienne Bloch hand stamp, one of these also with Bloch's credit, title, and date, in ink, the second with her credit, in red pencil, and the third with an address label, on verso. Circa 1934-39. Lucienne Bloch is best remembered for her documentary photographs of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. Bloch also created numerous fresco murals with her husband Stephen Pope Dimitroff across the United States. Bloch was employed by the WPA Federal Art Project from 1935-39 creating murals, including one at the House of Detention for Women in New York City. A prolific photographer, she also worked freelance for Life, documenting the working conditions and strikes of automotive workers.

Lucienne Bloch (1909-1999) was a Swiss born American artist. She was best known for her murals and for her association with the Mexican artist Diego Rivera, for whom she produced the only existing photographs of Rivera's mural Man at the Crossroads, painted in 1933 and destroyed in January 1934 at Rockefeller Center in New York City. A multi-talented artist, Lucienne attended the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris at 14, apprenticing with sculptor Antoine Bourdelle and painter Andre Lhote. Her close friend Beniamino Bufano also influenced her sculpture.In 1929, she pioneered the design of glass sculpture for the Royal Leerdam Crystal Glass Factory in the Netherlands. When Frank Lloyd Wright saw her glass works and spoke with her in New York, he invited her to teach at his architectural school, Taliesin East, where she worked with artist and muralist Santiago Martínez Delgado and other Taliesin fellows.

She was born in Switzerland, and her father was the celebrated composer, Ernest Bloch. The Bloch Family emigrated to the United States in 1917, where Lucienne expanded upon her already-thriving passion for glassmaking, murals, and photography. Throughout Bloch's life she was connected with various artists, including Frank Lloyd Wright, Antoine Boudelle, as well as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, with whom she developed a lifelong friendship.
