As a painter and graphic artist, he created landscapes and portraits in an idiosyncratic, often pointillist style of painting; as a graphic artist, he primarily created woodcuts. After attending the collegiate high school in Melk, together with Rudolf Junk and Richard Kurt Donin, Blauensteiner studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Christian Griepenkerl from 1898 to 1902. However, he broke off his studies prematurely and was a private student with Alfred Roller until 1903. In 1903 he made his first public appearance with woodcuts for Ver Sacrum. In 1904 and 1905 he took part in exhibitions at the Vienna Secession, and in 1908 and 1909 in the “Kunstschau”. Blauensteiner was a member of the artists' association “Die Hand” and the „Verein bildender Künstler Klosterneuburgs" (Association of Visual Artists Klosterneuburg) as well as the Hagenbund from 1911 to 1920, interrupted by military service from 1914 to 1916. He disarmed as a first lieutenant. From 1920, he was a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus (president in 1937/1938). Study trips took him through Germany, Italy and Dalmatia. 1938 - 1945 Blauensteiner worked as head of the Reichskulturkammer der bildenden Künste (Reich Chamber of Fine Arts for Vienna), partly on a voluntary basis; however, during this time he campaigned for the preservation of works by endangered artists (e.g. Carry Hauser, Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele). As a painter and graphic artist, he created landscapes and portraits in an idiosyncratic, often pointillist style of painting; as a graphic artist, he primarily created woodcuts. After attending the collegiate high school in Melk, together with Rudolf Junk and Richard Kurt Donin, Blauensteiner studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Christian Griepenkerl from 1898 to 1902. However, he broke off his studies prematurely and was a private student with Alfred Roller until 1903. In 1903 he made his first public appearance with woodcuts for Ver Sacrum. In 1904 and 1905 he took part in exhibitions at the Vienna Secession, and in 1908 and 1909 in the “Kunstschau”. Blauensteiner was a member of the artists' association “Die Hand” and the „Verein bildender Künstler Klosterneuburgs" (Association of Visual Artists Klosterneuburg) as well as the Hagenbund from 1911 to 1920, interrupted by military service from 1914 to 1916. He disarmed as a first lieutenant. From 1920, he was a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus (president in 1937/1938). Study trips took him through Germany, Italy and Dalmatia. 1938 - 1945 Blauensteiner worked as head of the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts for Vienna, partly on a voluntary basis; however, during this time he campaigned for the preservation of works by endangered artists (e.g. Carry Hauser, Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele). Blauensteiner exhibited in various German cities and in Prague. His works are included in the Belvedere, in the Albertina, in the Vienna Museum and in the Lower Austrian State Museum. "Der Pflüger" / Handdruck Nr. 10". Um 1903. 1898 inskribiert Leopold Blauensteiner an der Wiener Akademie der Bildenden Künste, wo er in der Klasse von Christian Griepenkerl lernte. Daran schloss sich 1901/02 eine Ausbildung als Privatschüler bei Alfred Roller, Gründungsmitglied der Wiener Secession und Redakteur der Zeitschrift Ver Sacrum, an. Alfred Roller stellte den Kontakt von Blauensteiner zur Gruppe um Gustav Klimt her. Seine ersten Farbholzschnitte veröffentliche Blauensteiner 1903 und 1904 in Ver Sacrum, dem offiziellen Organ der Wiener Secession. In den gleichen Jahren stellte er auch auf den Ausstellungen der Secession aus. Dieser großformatige, mit einer Schablonenspritztechnik überarbeitete Holzschnitt dürfte aus dieser frühen Werkphase Blauensteiners stammen. - Prachtvoller Druck mit Rändchen.     "Winter in Pötzleinsdorf": Raureif im Schlosspark. -- Öl auf Platte. 61,5 x 77,5 cm. Verso (eigenh.?) in Majuskeln bezeichnet "L. Blauensteiner / Winter in Pötzleinsdorf" sowie mit zwei Ausstellungsetiketten des Künstlerhauses Wien "1940 / 2943" (das andere darunter). -- -- Die klirrend kalte Luft und eisige Atmosphäre eines frostigen Tages nimmt Leopold Blauensteiner zum Anlass für ein Werk, das ornamentale Naturauffassung und architektonische Ansicht harmonisch miteinander verbindet. Aus getupften und gesprenkelten Farben evoziert er laubbedeckten Boden und reifbedeckte Zweige, die sich wie ein feines Netz auf die Oberfläche der dahinterliegenden Ansicht von Schloss Pötzleinsdorf am Rande Wiens legen. Festgehalten ist der Bau noch ehe 1950 die neobarocke Freitreppe abgetragen wurde, die hier die Fassade dominiert. Dass Vorder- und Hintergrund trotz so unterschiedlicher Malweisen - haptisch erhaben vorne, flach, beinahe zeichnerisch hinten - nicht auseinanderfallen, ist dem geschickten Einsatz von Farben als visuellem Bindemittel geschuldet.
