      VIRGILIO BLANCO GARRIDO (San Miguel de Presqueiras, Pontevedra, 1896-1948). "Street of Paris". Oil on canvas. Signed. Size: 55 x 46 cm; 81 x 71 cm (frame). Virgilio emigrated to Cuba at a very young age. There, when he was only 16 years old, he worked in various trades, as a waiter, as a clerk in a tailor's shop, combining these jobs with his attendance at the drawing and painting class at the Galician Centre in Havana. It was here that he exhibited for the first time in 1922. Later he obtained a scholarship to study at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. When he finished his studies he returned to Havana, where he was again awarded a scholarship, this time to Paris. It was in the French capital that he came into contact with great masters such as Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, imbibing avant-garde art. A plein air painting, learned from the Impressionists, was combined in his art with contributions from Cubism and Fauvism. In 1931 he settled in his native Galicia, where he held several exhibitions. In 1975 a group of Galician artists dedicated a tribute to him, recovering his painting and his figure, which had been forgotten, dying in the post-war period in destitution.
